Congrats on having your home completely paid for. Most people don't have that kind of luxury. Also what happens if your home burns down? You just gonna shell out $300,000+ cash to replace instead of paying $200/mo homeowner's insurance? $300,000 is 125 years worth of homeowner's insurance payments.

Yup. Homes are cheap. Paid it off in 2000. Second home offshore.

Allstate rider to my home insurance is better and much much cheaper: $40 a year for theft, repair or replacement.

My current 13” laptop will be 3 years old in March… and the screen just died. Purple flashing bars all over the place. Gutted as I thought the AppleCare + ran for 2 years. I was able to use my iPad screen as a mirror and found to my surprise, that it lasts 3 years… yay ? one free repair coming up… and a keyboard replacement as well!

So yes, for the outlay it gives peace of mind and right now…. A big saving given the cost of a new screen and keyboard ??

Apple was forced into that service program kicking and screaming. Anyway, it's one mere example of a litany of issues over the years for which many issues were not fixed for free unless it becomes a huge and embarrassing a problem for Apple. I was a victim of the video card scandal of a decade or so ago for which Apple had a service program that did not even fix the problem. It's much like the butterfly keyboards, which many say fail over and over again. Anyway, you can just watch a few Louis Rossmann videos and you will see what I mean.

Apple historically has put form over function in MBP design without regard to engineering best practices. I am not saying that the "butterfly keyboard effect" is an intentional strategy -- but it is certainly the end result.

I literally quoted 3 such programs I was part of, including 2 you mention... Apple was kicking and screaming to me not paying a dime for anything. The fact this stuff happened and has happened w/ a number of other service programs does not affect my opinion one iota about paying a warranty for a device that will not take me to the cleaners for a failure. I've had about a dozen MBPs/MBAs since 2008, and will likely have another few dozen when it's all said and done. If I purchased Applecare for all these devices I'd come out far behind against what I paid out of pocket.

Again, this (warranty) is a product Apple makes money on. Over time, you will lose out if you keep purchasing these. They're priced accordingly. It's like going to Vegas over and over again thinking you will beat the house in aggregate because every once in awhile you leave with money. Fear/hope is profitable.

At the end of the day you have to know yourself.
Are you a clumsy person? How's your track record with other electronics?

I never leave my drinks on the same surface as my MacBook and if I do I make sure I have my Mac on a stand in case I do spill. I bought this on amazon for $25 a few years back that works great.

My buddy spilled a drink on his 16" and it came out to $1475 before tax for apple to repair it.

AppleCare on the new 16" is $400 for 3 year coverage. $100 deductible for screen, $300 for everything else.
They also offer a yearly plan for $150.

This is probably the last Macintosh I add AppleCare to. I haven't filed a Macintosh AppleCare claim in 8 years and in that time I've spend about $1900 on AppleCare that never benefited me. AppleCare is insurance and it's all about your risk and exposure and how much you're willing to risk. AppleCare+'s biggest WIN is "Express Replacement" where Apple will send you a replacement before you mail yours in so if you make money on your computer and only have one, this is a huge benefit. They mail you a computer, you do the system transfer and migrate your data, then mail the broken one in and the replacement comes in 1-2 days. This to me is more important than a 3 year warranty.

If you purchase your apple products with an Amex Gold/Platinum, that extends your warranty by one year so I buy my iPhones with the Amex for 2 years and pay my cell phone bill with Amex which gets me two $800 damage claims per year per cell phone plan so my iPhones are covered by damage / failure by amex, not apple after 12 months.

I for sure wouldn't add apple care to an iMac but to a MacBook Pro that lives with you, it's not a bad idea if you can't just go out and replace it if you drop it out of your bag onto a tile floor.

Got a link to this stand? I really like the look of it!

I got it for the first time ever on my iPhone 13 Pro. I estimated how much I usually spend on different cases for my phone, and it was darn close to what AC+ costs. So I got it and go naked (which I usually did before too, with the cases in a drawer).

I also got it for my 14" MBP the other day. I just enjoy the peace of mind I guess. I know all about the financial benefits of not getting insurance for these kind of product, but it feels like a well deserved luxury to me. :)

Repairs on most Apple products according to iFixIt are under a score of 5. Finding repair shops that are competent is a challenge no matter where you live
Bottom Line: Buy AppleCare + and sleep good at night. The price is reasonable

Considering my clumsiness and preference for "naked" devices, yes, it's a tax write-off anyways.

I’ve always gotten it and have been very glad I did. It’s helped… phones, pads, imac and MacBook’s. it’s saved me thousands of dollars.

I have yet to have a Mac (dating back to the CoreDuo MacBook Pro) that has not needed repairs. I always get AC+ for them.
