I have the early 2009 mini, 2 GHz with 4gb RAM. Upgraded the internal HD to an SSD a couple years ago and it is like a new machine now. Runs great, very rarely do I need to reboot it - maybe once every few months.

Running El Cap currently but it looks like Sierra won't run on these mini's?

What do folks do in these situations? Just stop upgrading? Is there a way to hack the new OS to run on the older machines?

A hack is quite likely; people have found ways to "trick" recent versions of OS X to run on other machines Apple has stopped supporting.

My problem, though, is that I chose OS X because I wanted a Unix desktop machine with support from a major manufacturer. Using a hacked version of OS X, no matter how well it works, essentially negates that advantage. :(

Personally, I'm probably going to start migrating my older Minis to Linux. Given just how limited Apple's current desktop selection is today, my guess is that my future desktop machines are going to be running Linux too... :(
