(Opinion) Is it dangerous to leave old PowerPC Macs plugged in, right next to where you sleep?

Whenever you go to sleep or leave your home/apartment you should first go outside and flip all your circuit breakers so that power to everything is shut off.

If no electricity is flowing in the house/apartment at all - there is no danger.

👍

OMG I FEEL BOTH SEEN AND CALLED OUT.

Every time I leave town for the weekend: did I leave on the stove top? Also gotta shut off the water and sewage connections every time, cos there might be a leak… YOU NEVER KNOW!

Truth told, though: even if I head out for the weekend, computers and connections online continue as always.

I wouldn't say inherently dangerous. No more than any other potential electrical fire. There's also the EMF, Or Wifi signals that has yet to be proven if you want to go down that rabbit hole. I have my iPhone as my alarm clock so it's near my head. I guess. On my night stand. But if electrical fire is really a concern. Why not just plug it in to charge at the desk or what have you?

If wifi signals or mobile-cellular signals (high-frequency radio waves) affect the health of animals, then we’re all dead since the sun itself blasts across pretty every frequency, from sub-AM radio waves to deep into the ultraviolet.

People need to learn what an electromagnetic spectrum looks like and how and where things exist on there. 🤦‍♀️

Be sure to buy a lock for the breaker box.

Oh, deadbolted ALL THE WAY. 🔒

(But a cheap lock-picking kit on amazon would probably make quick work of it.) D: 🔒🔓

'Cause you know, you don't want your neighbors turning your power back on when you aren't home… ;)

THE NERVE OF THOSE BUSYBODIES…

(Unlike back in Texas, homes around here tend to have breaker boxes indoors, often in the basement.)

Just if you’re curious, I don’t do this, I was the curious one and wanted to know other people’s thoughts on this questionable thing.

Edit: here's an image of what I was picturing when I said "Right next to where you sleep"

Too institutional-sparse for my tastes. I’d never leave a PowerPC in such bland, spartan quarters.

This seems highly unnecessary, but if you're ok with it, that's great...
You’ve got it!

It can be fun to see how people come at the same thing with different approaches.

It’s like my kids asking me “why should I make my bed if I’m just going to sleep in it tonight?”

On the topic of “common usage”, there often is no right or wrong. There are some hard rules like don’t mix electronics with water / coffee / wine / beer, but otherwise if your regular practice results in a device continuing to operate 20 years down the track then I think whatever you’re doing is probably fine :)

“Because it feels more cosy to tuck into a made bed and easier to fall asleep.”

Indeed! :)

My G5 got real hot, until I redid the paste. If the thermals are good, it should run fine 24 7. I used to leave mine plugged in all day testing a radar app before the repaste. Now it runs so much cooler.

Reminder! Properly redo the thermals! You won't regret it!

Happy to report in that this argument didn't work on me when I was a kid and it certainly doesnt work with my boys now LOL (granted the oldest will be 6 next month). It's hard enough to get them to not take their shoes off in their bunk bed leaving sand everywhere (real fun to sleep on, vacuum out etc.).

The struggle is real. :D

I dunno man, unplugging the modem can help you sleep! All those microwaves just stop and it's so much easier when it's all shut off and stops broadcasting!

Because you can't go online and use the internet until midnight if the modem is unplugged. Lol.

My iBook G4 12 inch sleeps next to me, and so far, no complaints from it or me. We sometimes communicate before bed, too. ;)

This sweet beast came across the auction block recently. If only I could spare a kidney...

It’s back! Anyone need a vital organ?

Creepy guy has been holding back! Who needs lungs, right? I’ll throw in a cornea, too.
