I don't think they can lock it into a carrier. The iPhone needed to be locked because of phone portion of it. That is why they made the Touch, to be the unlocked device.
Exactly. If it had a 1TB SSD, free 3G connection for life w/unlimited access, hovered over your lap while you type on it, etc. and was $1000 then I wouldn't mind spending that much. However, if it was identical to the iPod Touch, except had a bigger screen (same capacity, features, etc.) and was $1000 I'd be hesitant.

Absolutely, now that i heard the news that it won't be priced "anywhere near" the $1,000 mark i'm kinda scared a carrier will bite you and sell it for 400US$ and 2 years of a 60$ contract... I'm almost praying they only sell it without a carrier
It is difficult to say since we don't know the features and specs of the product, but I doubt I will pay more than $699 for it. Realistically, I would like it to be in the $500 range, but who knows what is to come.
Knowing Apple and the rumored features of the Tablet, I wouldn't dare pay a penny more than $599. If the Tablet comes close to doing anything like what has been rumored I will be paying out the butt for subscriptions and services. (Applications, media, magazines, maybe 3G, TV channels?)
I'm already bleeding for my iPhone data plan. If you add too much more to that, on top of my already mounting bills, I won't be able to handle it.

If it is REQUIRED and I can't use my current iPhone data plan (yes AT&T -- can you say, finally tethered) I won't get one. If it is WiFi, I will get if it does what I want.
Haha. But seriously, how are we to know what we would pay for it if we do not know what it does or even what it is? Apple has sold millions of people their product before they even know what it is. Genius Apple. Genius.
HAVING SAID THAT (please someone get the Curb reference), I'd probably pay as much as I can convince my fiance to let me spend.
$600. I can't imagine it really competing against eBooks or netbooks or anything else at a price point higher than that. Any more money and one might as well get a [presumably] less fragile MacBook.

I completly agree. Apple has simply come out with so many awesome items, that I honestly believe that if Jobs said that the tablet costs 1500 bucks and he won't show an image of it, or even mention the specs untill the day it comes out, I am sure that at least 10s of thousands of people will buy one the second it comes out (me included), completly sight unseen. It really shows how well Apple has built and developed it's previous products, all of which are amazing, and I don't even consider myself a mac fanboy, I just love well built and developed products, and recently, Apple always delivers.
Maybe they will release a Mac tablet at 500 and a very different/much nicer Mac tablet pro for 1500. That would satisfy everyone! Although my dream would be a Mac tablet pro Hermes edition with an orange leather back and a chrome H logo for 3 grand. I would pick that up in a millisecond.
I assume that the functionality of the rumored device will trump any eBook or Netbook offered at $200-$400 less (depending on the established price).
$1,000 would be pushing it. I would be happy with $599 price point I think. If it has 3g, I hope it's cheap. I already have an iPhone and I really don't want to add another monthly fee to that.
Yeah I might pay 599 tops but if I were to get one at all I would probably wait a year for the price to come down/bugs to get fixed.
Honestly the problem is, with the possible exception of ebooks, I can't think of anything I can do on the tablet that i CAN'T do on my computer. Sure a tablet will probably do many things better but the reason I didn't have a problem spending 1200 on my macbook is because without it I wouldn't be able to do many things I consider essential to work/life etc. With a tablet...I'll be able to do these things in more places but its like spending a ton of money just so I can be a little more comfortable in bed or on the couch checking my email (or this blog
). I'm just not really sure that added convenience is worth the cost.
If/when the price drops down to maybe 299-399 I might reconsider. Or maybe apple really has something amazing up their sleeve that will blow me away. one can only hope

Not intending to pay for a contract, I have Wi-fi at home and work and won't be using it on the hoof enough.

$699 at most, but only if it is really incredible. If it's just like a large iPhone no need as I already have an iPhone, but we will see...
