passcode lock

Maybe it's just me, but there seem to be alot of lost iPhones with password protection on them. Am I the only one who doesn't use it?

I use this all the time. Literally, I never leave my phone without it being locked. Same with my iPod Touch. Good thing too... I lost my iPod Touch in the Middle East when travelling this summer. There was info on there that, while not earth shattering, I would rather strangers didn't get hold of. With the passcode lock, they can't; at least not easily. I also had the "10 tries kills it" feature turned on. Decent protection.

With a regular phone you unlock the keypad and look for names, preferably "home". For all we know this guy hoped this would get him past the lock screen and to some numbers stored on the sim (believe it or not not everyone knows everything about the iPhone and how it works, like he said, he read he should do this).

I still don't see what's "fishy". He didn't state where he found it so we can't assume he can just take it to the security office. Maybe he found it on the park? Who knows unless he replies again. Either way, why would he create this post if he didn't genuinely want to return it?

you're right, not everyone knows all there is to know about an iPhone, but to go as far as to restore an iPhone, to factory settings is a bit much, you have to go through multiple steps and it even tells you that you will lose everything on the phone.

as for it being fishy, like i said typical behavoir would have been to turn it in somewhere, a security office, police, store employee, but somewhere. the idea being the owner doesn't know you so he can't come to you for it, but he probably has an idea of where he lost it, so he will come back looking and asking around. and i don't know a bout you but if i lost a phone or my Palm Pilot back in the day i'd be retracing my steps and asking just anyone i could find about it nad definately checking with the police to see if someone turned something in.

Thanks for wanting to help someone, but I think you've already done your best to return the phone; if charging it and leaving it on for a few days won't get a call or anything, you can pretty much assume the owner has given up and it's for yours to keep.

Many folk may say take it to an AT&T store or your local law enforcement. Former they can't help as they are forbidden by law to divulge that information without a court order (which you won't get). For the latter, most law enforcement have too much to do then waste time returning a cell phone.

Seeing that you already wiped the phone, just keep it. ;)

you are right, the police have better things to do than to find owners of lost items but that is also where you should taking lost and found items so owners can inquire at a police station and claim items. if items go unclaimed then you can go back and make a claim. that is what you do when you lose other items like wallets, jewelry etc. at least that is what you should be doing. not taking it home and then going through the motions of trying to find the owner

There is really no point in everyone telling OP what they did wrong. Its over. Nothing they can do about what they did.

As for the phone, i would do what so many others are reccomending and take it to AT&T. Give them the name and explain the entire situation. They will get it to them. If u dont like that idea then this is a bit fishy.... BUT I HAVE FAITH IN U!!!:D

Go to AT&T store....

Tell them what happened and the person's name. Ask them to contact him and tell him that someone found his iPhone. You can give them your email, or your phone number, if you don't mind giving that out, and have the person contact you. That way, you can make sure the owner gets his phone back and not have to trust that anyone else will do the honest thing and get it back to the owner. Just my .02.
