danny_w: i think it has worked! i deleted the gmail account from my iphone again and re-added it, in hopes that the weird "load new messages" error would go away. well, at first i was getting no email. all of my tests were coming through fine to my computer, but my iphone was not receiving them. however, sometime this afternoon, i began to receive email on the iphone again! and the same emails were downloaded onto my computer when i got home from work later in the day. i am aware of the annoying issue with sent emails showing up in the inbox, but i think i can deal with that for now... thanks again for your help!
