Is calling a movie art ridiculous? The art may not be suitable for families, but it could definitely be considered "art."

by that standard anything is art. I'm not saying art has to be approved by "the right people" but use some common sense. If something is meant specifically to make you blow a load you're going to have a hard time arguing that it's art to me.

Well said. :D

I think you are working from somewhat different definitions of "art." Art can mean anything that takes some technical expertise to make. In that sense, yes, all porn is art, because you need to be able to handle a camera, no matter how poorly. But art can also mean something that has aesthetic value. Which, well, I've seen "artistic" porn, but I'd have to say that not all porn has aesthetic value, therefore not all porn is automatically "art."

I'm not justifying its position in the application by saying it is art. I believe they are two different arguments.

1. It is not within Apple's responsibility to keep porn out of the application.
2. Porn is a form of art.

You are saying that it is not art based on your opinion. I would say that there is somebody in the world who would find every piece of pornography aesthetically pleasing, therefore it is all art.

As I have said before, I don't think the fact that it is art has anything to do with this topic, but I do believe it is indeed art.

I stand corrected. I should have said not all porn is art, according to my aesthetic standards. And I do think that all porn is art, in the sense that they require some level of technical expertise to make. I just think that, well... if only one out of, say, a 100 people find it aesthetic, then can we agree that it is less artistic than something that 90% find aesthetically pleasing?

Agreed. I think that can be said about most types of art, but as I said before, I don't think "being art" justifies its position in the application.

Thanks. And I agree "being art" and inclusion in the app are separate issues. There are tons of movies rated R and above that are not only artistic, but also socially, morally and philosophically meaningful, but it won't be appropriate to show them to young children. I think Seadragon has great potential, but opening it up to let anyone post pictures to it seems to me a mistake. They should just limit this app to linking to selected high quality photos of historic, artistic and scientific interest. I find viewing low resolution photos on this app an unsatisfying waste of its capabilities. You zoom in and all you get are blurry dots!

Some people are afraid to judge anything. It was porno, it wasn't art.

Prudes should just mind their own business, and anyone with kids who just lets them play with open-ended software of any sort is asking for trouble and bears full responsibility, period.

Are you serious? You're calling all pornography art? That's a ridiculous technicality and you know it.

Sorry to say, our opinions don't matter in what the definition of art is. You call it a ridiculous technicality, I call it definable. I don't have to like it, but just because I disagree, doesn't mean I'm right.

The only people qualified to "Judge" are those who have become experts in the field. Otherwise, it just becomes someones opinion. Your "opinion" is noted. Your "fact" is wrong.

Art: The quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

Different strokes for different folks.

This is also a skewed poll of percentage. Who are you asking? The ENTIRE worlds population? Or, 100 men? 100 women? Think of the demographic. Hell, watch Nightline and see how many dudes Chris Hanson nabs in a weekend. I bet ALL THOSE guys think it's art, and aesthetic. The porn industry makes HUGE money, and massive sales. I would have to think that using your theory, you might lose the fight.

OK, you can argue all you want of what is art. A guy stacking rocks in the middle of nowhere that no one but himself will ever see can be called art. BUT some of these pictures had the websites they were coming from on them. That is called advertising!

Ok, this thread needs to be laid to rest, come on, porn = art, art = everything, this has turned into the most boring flame war I've seen on here, and they aren't exactly heated flamewars to begin with...

I could not care less what you "note", I am not wrong and unlike you, I have morals and do not delegate determining what porno is to others. Determining the difference between right and wrong seems to be beyond the ability of at least 2 people in Chicago lately.

Who cares anyways. does it really matter if a kid sees porn when there 5 cause i guarantee any kid with an internet connection will have seen porn by 17. So its not really a big deal. There going to get exposed to sooner or later, who cares if its sooner?
