Am suprised if there are people able to leak ipod info, why journalists etc haven't been really pushing to find out more about potential dates for Mac events/updates. Mini included.

That is because everything about Mac right now is iPhone/iPod related. Or at least it seems that way with the amount of media coverage covering the iPhone etc.

I am still waiting for a new Macbook personnally. I doubt I will see it anytime soon with the expection of the holidays, in which we might see one.

Well we did get leaks of the new Al case coming.

And with iPods, it is easier to learn about them because of all the accessories. We knew what the 4th Generation iPod Nano and iPhone 3G looked like because Apple had to tell the accessories manufacturers the dimensions months ago so they could design, manufacture and ship product in time for the formal unveiling.

It's different with the portables because demand for "cases" for them is less, so Apple doesn't feel the need to release those specs early. And they run the current version of OS X, so there are no UI leaks or anything. And Apple doesn't make the chipsets, so there is nothing to "scoop" there, either.

It all adds up to making it easier for Apple to maintain secrecy.

I'm really disappointed there's been no news on the mini/mini replacement. I have no need or desire to spend a lot of money on the mac pro, I don't want an all in one, but I really want a Mac. Mini is probably the only way I'll be able to get one, but it's just so outdated now. Everything has been about the iPhone/iPod this year. How many iPods can people own for flips sake (we have 3 between 2 of us in our house).

It's not that outdated really. I just got mine a few weeks ago (1.83Ghz, upgraded it to 2GB DDR2) and it flies. I use it as a media center playing 720p and 1080p videos flawlessly! I guess it depends what you want from your Mini!

You must not want one bad enough or you would already have one. The Mac Mini is far from outdated. If you are not willing to play by Apples rules then jump ship and get a Windows box then.

I wondered how long it would be before someone made a lame comment like that. The fact that Apple has so many rules are the main reason I don't already own a Mac. I think Mac OS is beautiful, but the hardware lockin is something I'm not happy with.

My current 2 year old laptop has a better spec than the mini. I've got a dead Windows desktop box that I've been wanting to replace for the last few months. I really would like to replace it with a Mac. I already have a gorgeous display so I don't want an iMac but the specs are great for my use. The main thing that lets the mini down for me is the graphics card.

hey man,

are you playing your 720p/1080p that has been ripped into mkv files etc?

if so i am just wondering what programs you use and about what sizes each movie is (so i can figure out bitrates and whatnot).

i have a nice HD LCD tv, just bought a DVI-HDMI cable and im just checking if the Mini can play all of my 1080p content. my MBP struggles with 1080p content (its a CD so ill give it a break). im guessing that the C2D CPU of the mini can hold its own while playing at HD output......??

seeing as how the "let's rock" event was focused on ipods, is there any chance the october event will hold a mac mini update?

according to the buyer's guide it has been 404 days since the last update on august 7th, 2007, almost twice as long as some of the other macs. does this mean apple's totally neglecting the product or something else is in store?

I'm hopeful that the October event will bring news (either good or bad) regarding the Mini.

I think apple has made it rather clear that they do not intend for the Mac Mini to be a computer with top of the line specs, and it doesn't really have to be. THe thing does pretty much anything you would want short of gaming and some top of the line graphics stuff. This all being said I do wish apple would put more effort into upgrading it, we really should have one with a X3100 in it at least by now, its such a kick a$$ little computer I hate to see apple neglect it as much as they have been doing.
