who say's the Merom is less speedy? If this is true then someone please explain why this is the case. My impression was that a 2.3GHz Merom would be exact same speed as 2.3GHz Conroe. I mean they have same clockspeed, same cache, same basic design, what would make Merom slower?

Another vote for a 24" now. I have a 2.16ghz 24" with the 7600GT and 2GB ram. It's a bit quicker than the dual 2.7gz G5 I had before, and plenty fast for any kind of regular non-gaming tasks for quite a long time I imagine. Certainly copes with everything I've thrown at it. And it ran Quake 4 at 1900x1200 with everything on max, pretty well too. If you play the waiting game, you'll never buy as there'll always be something new coming along in 6 months. Sooner or later you have to take the plunge. With the new iMacs out just weeks, now is arguably that time.

I believe there are some slight differences in architecture which help the Conroe to be faster. But I don't believe the difference is particularly marked.

I would expect an iMac update in February or March after Intel ships Santa Rosa chipset.

Conroe is substantially faster than Merom for the simple fact that the Conroe chipset operates at a 1066Mhz front side bus, compared with Merom's 667mhz.

The Front Side bus matters very little in the benchmarks. (3-6% boost going from 1066 to 1333 MHz.)

Conroe clocks a lot higher, faster then Merom. Don't forget about the X6xxx series.

no new design... the only thing i would change is the speakers go on the side and are meash like so you see them... this way it can loose its chin
I think Apple should lose the speakers completely, and allow people to buy add-ons if they want. Just like high-end HD panels - use your own speakers and cut down the size of the machine.
