If an e-ink user says they like it better for reading, do we really need others to come along and tell us we don't really like it better? Wouldn't we know?

I didn't say you didn't like it better. You said it was easier on the eyes, and I was countering that LCD isn't hard on the eyes.

I know a heck of a lot of people with LCD monitors. I don't know a single person that complains about LCD being hard on the eyes.

While I haven't done a rigorous survey, 100% of the people I know or work with that have ever mentioned it, express that LCD is very easy on the eyes as well.

Most people? Again - fact out of the air. Why do people insist on making their opinions and their experiences into sweeping generalization about everyone else. Can't you just say YOUR experience is XYZ?

While not scientific, given that that number is 100% of maybe 30 or 40 people, it is fairly safe to assume that most people find LCD easy on the eyes.

It is a reasonable assumption based on experience in the world. Not everything requires an independently run/funded study.

Do you disagree with my observation/assumption? Or are you just being pedantic and arguing for the sake of arguing?

Personally i'm leaning more towards Android based tablets..

Dell's mini5 seems nice, and they plan a range of android tablets, increasing in size.

From what i've seen the hardware is solid.

These proprietary things are garbage. In my mind, it's a three horse race. Apple has the best chance at success here. Google and it's Chrome OS has a good chance at being great for what it does, but I don't think it'll beat iPad on content and content delivery (which is why I want one). And the dark horse is Microsoft. You bet your ass they're gonna cook something up here. There's a strong argument that even a PC version (like the HP Slate) is more useful then the iPad.

My personal hope is that Amazon and Microsoft combine forces. Maybe brand the Courier device with Kindle. I think that would be the competitions best chance at making a dent in the market that Apple will be ruling.

The question for me isn't whether or not you prefer e-readers, but rather why you prefer them. I am sceptical of e-ink's reflective technology as the reason why e-readers are more comfortable to read from. I cannot see why reflected light would be inherently any different to emitted light. Now, the fact that the e-ink based readers, by their nature as reflective devices, automatically maintain appropriate brightness for the surrounding environment (avoiding frequent, large pupil dilation) may indeed make a difference, but that could in principle be emulated by an emissive display so it isn't an inherent advantage of e-ink.

I'd be very interested to see a study that compared the significance on eye-strain and other visual and cognitive problems of using reflective displays over emissive ones, especially when compared with the significance of form-factor (I have a suspicion, which I'd like to see tested, that it is the constant minute and unconscious adjustments to the focus point that a hand-held e-reader provides that makes it a less tiring experience).

Does anyone here have any pointers to such a study?

Well DUH, no? At least no one in that video referred to it as magical.

There's a fine line between an actor demoing it, and someone (being/)pretending to be a school teacher lauding the thing.

I don't know about the US, but i'm sure the ASA would have to mull a little if that kind of advertising came on in the UK.

The last thing this is is an iPad rival. That thing is a design abomination. What's with the ridiculously large inset/plastic frame margin?

Visually it's not up to the iPad but feature wise it beats the iPad hands down. I still want the iPad but this might also be a purchase for me.

Practically every tablet coming out will beat iPad in a feature list contest. But there is much more to a product than a feature list. Here are some more feature list "winners":

Honestly (and I know I'm about to get flamed badly for this but) the Zune has been a better music device and software application for at least two generations now but Apple "wins" that every generation. It'll be the same with the iPad.

If you're doing a feature comparison, including weight, thickness, OS, App store app count, Ease of use, ecosystem size, developers for the product etc can count too.

Apple isn't a traditional slate, which is the start of a downfall on comparing. Android could bring out something similar, but we awiait this.

thanks for your hyperbole. Like it or don't like it. It certainly has plenty of features making it better than a lot of things we've seen.

A rock? Get original.
.... Get original? Wow... talk about being a little bit hostile ehh... I wasn't seriously comparing it to a rock - it was a joke, because I thought the possibility of being a rival to the iPad was ridiculous, but I still think its junk.

Combining LCD with e-ink is awesome, but it's much better if you can have both in the same screen. Especially since the technology to do it already exists. The Adam is a much more interesting competitor to the iPad:

The Adam IS a better competitor. I wouldn't buy an iPad for a number of reasons, but I'm waiting for the Adam with baited breath. It has many features the iPad lacks. Personally, I think it looks better too, but that's subjective.
