Personally, I've never had an ugly girlfriend and if it came down to choosing between intelligence and beauty, I wouldn't hesitate to choose beauty. Intelligence is overrated.
I'm serious.
Besides, even the most intelligent people can make such stupid things. Intelligence is not just overrated, it is a concept that doesn't take much into consideration.

I don't know about intelligence per se. But I prefer a companion that is on the same level of intellect and education as I am. It can be very tedious when that is not the case. My first girlfriend was a sweet girl but she was a professional hairdresser and had very little insights in the stresses and issues of someone pursuing an academic career. It caused quite a bit of conflict and led to the end of the relationship. She was, at least in my mind, quite beautiful but that wasn't sufficient to make up for the deficits the relationship had. It wasn't really anyone's fault but we just moved in very different circles and neither was really comfortable in the other's world.
My wife is beautiful and attractive in my mind but certainly doesn't rate a 10 in the current societal definition of beauty. She's cute, but probably wouldn't rate more than a 7 on the beauty scale. Nevertheless, for me, she is perfect and that is all that really counts, especially because we are so compatible in all the other aspects of a relationship as well.
