New computer from work...sadly hospitals will not operate on macs.

Dell Lattitude E6510 with dock and monitor and keyboard for my workstation. I love being an informatics pharmacist!

nice job

i really like that clock

Thanks! I love it too. Good thing the glass face and motor was in good shape. The original hands were bent. I was able to get used replacements from a local clock repair guy. The wiring and light sockets needed replacing, and of course painting. I love doing this kind of work :)

That's a load of rubbish, the entire Radiological department at my dads hospital uses macs. It's not that they don't operate on macs, it's the technicians who set up the networks that don't want macs to work. Find a few server addresses, install Parallels for those few windows apps and your good to go, trust me, I had to set up one in my dads office!

Hmm I have been in 10 hospitals in the Maryland DC VA area now because of rotations and none used Macs. And I don't think it is the technicians. It is the cash moneys that dictates what machines they use.

And IT keeps a tight hold on all programs, VPN access and and intranet access. I have to go to them for everything. Have to even request permission to get my email offsite. It sucks.

Anyway - got this for free I guess. Upgrade from my late 2009 iMac to a 2011 because Apple Geniuses dented my machine while repairing it. I have always wanted to walk away with something new from the Apple Store, so this weekend I will be able to!

You'll have to come and work in the UK ;) With this now http://pixmeo.pixmeo.com/products.html#OsiriXMD people can legally use macs to diagnose images, so I would not be surprised if they become more prolific in the next couple of years. Just look at some of these case studies.. http://www.apple.com/science/medicine/

Lol maybe. But right now a lot of programs are largely windows based. It is a cost thing. Dells will always be cheaper than distributing macbooks to thousands of employees. Not that I defend my institution, but that is where we are at here in my area anyways. I only know that hopkins has ipads for Drs to review images on the go, but it's a novelty at this point. Maybe it will be more prevalent in the future.

Aboo - are your programs windows or osx based? Do you have to run a VM? We are a Cerner hospital, with several other smaller programs feeding into our main application. And I am positive that these other programs are windows only.

The major hospital system down here is pretty much Windows based. I'm sure they have Macs in specialty areas that use certain programs, but all you'll mainly see is Windows. The funny part is that some of them are Pentium 4's and some of them are newer PC's (with Windows 7 sticker on it) but they all end up running Windows XP. Come on people, XP is, what, 10 years old? lol Either way, the computers are so locked down that it doesn't even matter.

Agreed. Every computer in this hospital and the 9 other hospitals in this system is operating on XP. I believe that the programs that have been developed were tested and built on XP which is why we stay with that operating system. And knowing the applications we use for pharmacy verification...it is probably true. The system is archaic.

When it comes to hospitals, I have two words that almost all American system administrators dread: HIPAA Compliance.

Macs still suck in the enterprise. Ironically, it's much easier to keep a large number of Windows (or Linux, as appropriate) computers in security compliance than it is to keep a large number of Macs.

Yes you make a very good point. That and most of the platforms I know hospitals run on are windows based to allow for integration of various applications and their modules (Epic, Cerner, Meditech, McKesson, GE, etc)..hence my statement regarding health systems and windows. That is why I was suprised when Aboo said his entire hospital runs on macs...

Aboo...where do you work?!?! You must have a very tech friendly administration to use apple products.

I don't have a pic but I won an iPad 64Gb wifi + 3g from a fundraiser at my daughter's school. It cost $25 for 3 raffle tickets, so not completely free. But a pretty good return on investment.

I'm hardly an expert on the subject, but I've been to a good few hospitals around the city. I've seen a lot of Solaris-based SPARC thin clients around hospitals - recently our health authority has been introducing smart cards into hospitals, and every shot I've seen of the new system has used Sun systems. I've seen lots of Solaris workstations in use throughout the hospital, in radiology, etc., but you do see some Windows machines around as well. I guess each health system has its own standards.
