I started scrolling when Safari had only loaded the top third of that image and at a glance I thought it was dirty picture!

For a brief moment it could be. Still dirty, just not the kind you were maybe hoping for!
How did you do the Desktop 1, Desktop 2... bar where one should expect the regular menubar?
That's the new Mission Control bar in El Capitan. When mission control is activated, it will give a a little bar that shows the current desktop before showing the desktops and apps themselves like the old Mission control bar at top. It's more like a quick glance type of thing.
