Windows XP is almost 10 years old. I would strongly suggest buying something like Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit for a new iMac. Windows 7 is actually pretty good.
This is an awesome thread, I wish found it earlier. Any thoughts on how the new base model of the Mac Pro would run at 1080p? I would most likely upgrade the video card to the ATI 5870.

A GTX 285 can max it out at 1680x1050, so a 5870 should be fine with 1920 x 1080
You should be able to play it windowed, with low-medium settings.
well you were right, beta 3 gave me more options to turn down the graphics even further. Now on my 2007 alu. imac 256mb radeon2600hd card I am getting usually 23-32 f.p.s. out in the field. I put my preorder in, i feel this is pretty good performance.
S/E may want to change system requirements before shipping.
People have gotten this to work in Wine on Linux...
so I gave it a go to try and get it working with Wineskin.. but I wasn't able to get it to get past a crash after hitting to start the benchmark.
Being that it worked in Linux... its a good bet it wont be long until the gull game runs in Wine and/or Crossover just fine.

I just ran the benchmark on my hackintosh with an i7 and a 5970 (only half of which works in windowed mode so it's basically running as a slightly underclocked 5870).
720p: 6158
1080p: 3740
From what I've seen of the benchmark, it's not the most graphically intense game and once newer drivers are out and when the game's running fullscreen instead of in a window (which always hinders performance), a standard 5870 will be able to run it at 2560x1600 without too many issues without AA (maybe even with AA).
I will be attending Gamescom from next Monday until Sunday with SQUARE ENIX, and we will have a huge giveaway of beta test codes. If I can get my hands on a few, I will give them away here via PM.
Dragonforce I'd love to try the beta out as well if you can get me a key.

In 8 years of playing I have only played on the PS2 a handful of times, and disliked every minute of it. I said only in my opinion is FFXI on the PS2 unplayable. I know there are a lot of people who play/played it on the PS2, but for my tastes it was unacceptable. I say this mostly for the huge lack of resolution. The few times I've played it on the PS2 everything seems so pixelated that I couldn't tell the difference between a Goblin, a bee, and a tree just about. Then again, I've played since NA launch (and still do) on a PC and use the registry hack to bump up the resolution well above what it normally allows, and use the DrawDistance plugin for greater clipping distance. I also, am used to useing 3rd person POV zoomed all the way out so I can get a clear view of any mobs around me. That's not even mentioning the massive lag experienced when switching macro pages. As I said, I know a lot of people are perfectly happy playing on the PS2, but I personally am unable to deal with the lag and lack of resolution.
As for FFXIV and the i7 w/ 512mb vram I'd suspect it would do better due to the greater memory, but as for how much I cannot say. While I feel FFXIV will be plenty playable on my i5 MBP, I'm not planning on it being my primary playing system; for that I'll be using my 3.7ghz quad core Win7 desktop and may likely use my MBP for dual boxing and muling gear if needed as I do with FFXI currently.

I have the 2007 aluminum imac as well with the radeon 2600 card. (imac 7,1).
Is this the same model as you?
I was very excited to see that you are able to play the game on it. My imac scores a 300 on the benchmark under XP.
I'm THIS CLOSE to dropping $1200 on one of the new imac model just to be able to play this game, but if you are telling me it's playable on my current hardware i'd rather save the money and deal with semi-crappy performance until the ps3 version.

I was a hardcore player from NA release to 2006, a year off and a last hurrah for another year. The big nerf to beastmaster devastated me since it was my biggest means for casual play and just playing in general, I still had fun on a few other jobs.
I'm really looking forward to playing this, especially since Square Enix says theres a lot for casual players.
My PC specs are 3395(720) and 2223(1080), quad core, good graphics card which I can post specifics on later. My macbook is too old for gaming.
