love the jazz

i have a japan made olympic white one and a candy apple red limited active 1980 precision w/ gold plated hardware and matching headstock

will post pictures later

I love Jazz basses, it sucks that the new USA ones are garbage though...the build quality is horrible now. I had (up until a few months ago) a 1992 Fender Jazz Bass Plus...probably the best jazz Fender ever made. Had a smaller body, but 22 frets with Lace Sensor pups, active Kubicki pre amp with active/passive controls, gotoh bridge, and schaller tuners. Amazing bass, you could get any sound out of it.

Have you tried any US Jazz bass made from 2008 onwards? The "American Standard Series" is arguably the best run of Jazz and P Basses Fender has made in a while (excluding Custom Shop and Reissues). The build quality on this series is vastly improved over the mid-2000s models. They sound, feel, and look great.

My 2006 American Jazz is top flight when it comes to build quality, playability and sound quality. I've had at least 20 basses in the 39 years I've been playing including other Fenders. This is by far my favorite bass ever.

I think a lot of it comes down to personal taste in sound and playing style. I used a Fender Deluxe Jazz Bass from the 1980s which was fretless. The pups were passive and of the standard passive type on the fretted Fender Jazz basses I like.

But for so many reasons, I like active pups on fretless basses and this Fender was just weak. I know I could have put in active EMGs and this thing would have been a monster. I generally don't like active pups on fretted basses though as I go for more of a classic rock sound and use a pick, but if I did more tapping and slapping, or was good at it, I would prefer the active pups. I am sure there are plenty of bassists who use both types of pups.

As for guitars, I have gravitated toward more medium output passive pups for their warmer sound and shied away from the EMG 81s I used to think were the best thing on earth.

No it's a flame neck

I bought from Wildwood guitars. It's a special production for them.

Just took some pics to show it better...Enjoy.

That is a beautiful neck. It really sets off the guitar. Was the price reasonable for the special production run?

That's a flame unlike anything I have seen by Fender. That is very, very nice. I saw a Pensa Suhr bolt on with that much flame years ago, and some Andersons built with maple necks like that. What's the radius on your Strat's neck? And does it have the larger, more modern frets like some of the Custom Shop's updated Nocasters?

While I like the very round traditional 7.25" inch neck with thin frets, a lot of people who love Jackson, Gibson, Ibanez, etc like flatter radius necks in the 9.5" inch range or flatter and bigger Dunlop frets and thus go for the modernized Fenders. I once had a Custom Shop Strat which had really huge frets and a neck akin to an 80's heavy metal neck, but with the general appearance of a Strat. Most people who were not Fender fans were blown away by that company's ability to keep yet update a design without wrecking it.

I havent tried anything after 2008. But you really cant deny that the quality of all American Fender guitar/basses has decreased over time. I had a 2004 Fender Jazz (American) and while it sounded great, within months I was having problems with the finish flaking off and the headstock started to crack (right along the E tuner). Getting it repaired under warranty was next to impossible and Fender refused to help me. I sold it weeks later. My other basses are in amazing condition and I have never had any issues with any of them. But, it isn't just Fender that has issues. I bought my Stingray new in 2006 and it was just under $1200 on Musicians Friend, now the price is $1400...in 3 years a $200 increase! The quality of new rays has gone down significantly too. It is just how it is, everybody is trying to cut corners. Too bad it isnt 1962...I would love an old J bass.

I agree. The QC of Fender has been notoriously spotty in the late 1990s - mid 2000s. However, 2008 was a pivotal year for the company. The American Standard series really turned things around. You owe it to yourself as a Fender enthusiast to check it out. I'm not promising it's the right guitar series for you, but I believe you will notice a vast difference from your 2004 model.
On another note, I'm surprised you think the EBMM quality has decreased. They are well known throughout the music industry as one of the best quality mass produced instruments available.
If you really want to talk about inflated prices, may I suggest you take a look at the Fender Geddy Lee Bass. Around 2004-2006 the bass was priced near $600. By early 2008 it was $1000. Now it is $1200. Absolutely ridiculous.

Thanks for the compliments

Bought it last year. Was a special run of guitars that are still being sold today at Wildwood guitars. They're real nice guys there..check em out

The guitar is simply a dream to play..has 9.5 radius..6105 frets..great neck thickness..they said it's a john english size..which i think is the thickness of a 59 strat.

Yeah the bolt is missing, somehow managed to destroy the thread inside the nut, need to replace it.

The only thing I don't like about it is that to tune it to dropped C (my main tuning), you need .12-.56 strings just to keep the strings from flapping about, could archieve tightness on my old Jackson import V with a USA neck screwed on, same scale length. It baffles me.

That's quite strange if the scale length was identical. Did it also have a Floyd on it? Maybe a local luthier or guitar tech could set it up for you with your preferred gauge of string.

Both had original floyds. Feels perfect to play & everything seems to be set up right, just seems really weird that you need a whole guage thicker strings just to keep 'em tight.

Most of the problem with the build quality is not because they are made in the USA, many of the major companies are contracting labor and materials out of Asia--South Korea is responsible specifically for many horrible guitars currently on the market.

I don't think I posted my guitar here yet... Just bought a Fender Deluxe Stratocaster. It was half price on boxing day brand new. I also have a squier strat that's about 6 years old which isn't even worth showing. I can't believe I played that for 6 years.
