A friend gifted me a pair of 1972-73 Sony DR-7A, they're are incredibly good, little used, great condition. Too bad I dropped them from the chair and now sounds pretty bad :(

I have been considering an a future upgrade to my portable setup in terms of both of source and headphone. Currently I use an iPod Classic with Apple's EarPods as my portable. I am considering on upgrading to the HiFiMAN HM-601 Express as a new source. For headphones I was thinking of using HiFiMAN's own HE-400 orthodynamic headphone. :)

destroysall.

If you have the money and you are sure you'll truly enjoy the experience I'd say go for it.

I personally would try some "cheapish" LOD portable amp and a half decent pair of headphones first, just to see what it sounds like and if it really is "necessary" to shall out such a big amount of money for a top of the line MP3 player and pair of headphones.

But who are we to tell people what they should or shouldn't do with their money.

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks. My primary reason to upgrade would be the support of hi-resolution music. I've been purchasing a lot of 24-bit/96kHz music as of late thanks to HDTracks. However, conversion is always a way to bypass this. Thanks again!:D

If you have an iPhone you can also grab Equaliser Pro or a similar app as they're FLAC compatible, Then like the other poster said, Get a half decent LOD amp and cans and see if you like that first???

Are you a member on Head-Fi? If not I recommend the place very highly, Loads of help on there to be had re portable hifi ;)

Thank you! :D I personally use mainly AIFF and ALAC files and have converted my FLAC files to AIFF to make it easier to transport them to my iPod Classic. I have tried the iPod Classic with both the FiiO E11 amplifier and audio technica ESW-9 headphone, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have considered getting these two myself instead of the HE-400 and HM-601 Express.

On the topic of Head-Fi, I am a member and have been for awhile. It's thanks to Head-Fi that I now own this somewhat decent setup (which is in desperate need of a source and amplifier upgrade :D):

Got these for christmas they sound amazing and the noise cancelation is awesome.

I have had them all - grados, denons, sennheisers, custom iems etc... the bose qc15 remain a favorite due to the noise cancellation. Very crisp and airy sound.

These... Sennheiser RS180. I could have taken a picture, but that would have involved finding my card and making it look prettiful. So Google helped me out =D

A pair of BassBuds. Groupon had them for $20, a 78% discount.

In terms of sound signature how do these compare to the Sennheiser Amperior

I bought and returned them. The sound is more warm than the Amperior. No real sprakle to the highs but also no sibilance that the Amperior can have. It has a warmer more full mid range and the bass may not hit as hard but it has more body to it.

I liked the sound but the cups did not fit around my ears despite it being an over ear headphone. The real leather pads are very comfortable for an on ear design but I still thought they were kind of uncomfortable after 30+ minutes of use. Sennheiser tried to make them small for portable use but basically excluded people with slightly larger ears from using these as on ears. Even average ears will be tight inside the cups. Would have made more sense to have them fordable instead of making the cups so small.

Here are my cans the Hifiman HE-400's, They may not look as stylish as other brands but these are planers and have some of the best sound you can get in the $400 range. I am currently running them of a little fiio E17 amp/dac.
