I'm at 5 hours of usage, 21 hours of standby and I'm at 15% battery charge. A lot of the usage was browsing wifi and just playing with it in general. I'm pretty happy with it so far. This is the first full charge I've done and I'm letting it go to zero so I can calibrate the battery.

EDIT: In comparison, I had a BlackJack and I can say without a doubt that this phone lasts longer than the BlackJack on a single charge.

EDIT 2: Interestingly it seems as if the iPhone turns off keyboard clicks when the battery gets low, I am now at 10 percent.

yeah it was charging at night, i removed it this morning but didnt use till a few hours later and then got the 4 hours. :(

Are you sure it was charging? i.e. did the battery indicator come on the screen? If it was charging, it sounds like you might have a bad battery.

yeah, the green bar was full and i did get the message in settings "time used since last fully charged" which did not appear until i had fully charged it.

I will have to keep testing it for a few days and then see what I can do if it stays that way.

the iPhone's battery is great if you're not doing too much with it. I've been using it for a lot of my browsing lately even though a computer is just in the other room. still charging "just" once a day. I'm fairly impressed so far.

WiFi woes?

I've been thinking about buying an iPhone too, but the battery issue is a major concern.

On the Apple discussion boards, the consensus seems to be that when WiFi is enabled it will search continuously for a network, and hence, drain the battery fairly quickly and it interferes with a the iPhone charging to 100%.

The supposed fix is to turn off WiFi unless it's being used. While that makes sense, some posters here have said that it doesn't help.

Also, according to the Apple discussion site, lithium batteries should only be drained once a month or so.

I have posted it a few times and will say it again.

As someone who uses the phone quite a bit during the day, the battery life lasts me from 9am to 4pm roughly now.

That includes a few hours with internet (Wifi/Edge used both), text messaging, email checking, ext...

Some say I should be happy with it AND I am getting the power expected...fair enough

I guess I just ASSUMED (Ass Out of You And Me, I know) it would be a little better and that I could get through the day without it dying.

But, I will try the Wifi advice and see how it goes....

I picked mine up at about 7 last night and it was off the dock fully charged at about 9. I probably used it constantly from then till 5 am surfing through wifi, watching youtube videos, and about 20 mins of family guy. I let my brother watch youtube videos for awhile before the batteries were dry. Overall very impressed with the device

Well if u dnt use it non stop for web browsing it should last loonger.

Ok this is weird. I drained the battery all the way to 0% and it said to plug it in so i did. adn when i woke up the fone was either turned off or Froze.. everything i pressed it wouldn't turn on! so i did the rest and it turned it on.. and it was half charge and it was contiuing to charge (still is) my quesiton is has anyone else had this problem...? i dono if i should be worried. :(

This is my 2nd iPhone!!

I have been reading a lot about the battery issue because I'm just trying to figure out if mine is opreating ok. Currently I have 3 hours and 5 minutes of usage and 10 hours and 40 minutes of standby. I have listened to the ipod for about and hour and a half, made about 45 minutes worth of calls, a few texts and browsed the internet for about 20 minutes. wi-fi has been off the whole day. With all this the battery is a little above half left in the tank. How does this compare to others experiences?

My current usage:

Standby 1 day, 15 hours
Usage 10 hours 18 minutes

This is since my last full charge.

I've been playing lots of music, always sure to press the sleep button as soon as the song starts. I've also made some calls, done some surfing using my Wifi. Sunday and Mondays are my days off so my phone gets used more on those days.

I've found the biggest battery suck for me is surfing on an EDGE connection. I spent about 90 minutes of straight surfing while my son napped in the back seat and this sucked 50% of the battery down. This was with default iPhone settings (didn't turn off WiFi or anything else while surfing).

I am probably having my worst battery performance right now. I'm at 2 Hours, 44 Minutes of usage and 1 Day, 4 Hours of standby, and I just got the 20% battery warning.

What's the deal with maximizing the battery life on these phones? Is it good to drain the battery all the way, and then charge it, or charge it "every chance you get", which for me would be every night.

My iPhone has been pretty good. As long as I don't abuse the ipod feature, it lasts pretty much the entire day.

I'm getting 22-24 hours standby and 7-8 hours use when the 20% left appears
Then I charge it...I feel that from now on I will not be so concerned and will be syncing my iPhone throughout the day, where it gets a little top off, so I may never have a full cycle recharge (unless I check battery life again)

I never use EDGE (plenty of WiFi in Socal) and I lock my iPhone during iPod use. Maybe that's why I'm getting good battery performance.

and I see (after being in a tech hiadous) that you have to pay about $90 to get the batt replaced.

that's ashame.

Never replaced a battery yet in any of my iPods, including my almost 5 year old Gen 1. I put two in my Razr at $65 a shot in less than 2 years...so for me its an easy choice!

I got 5 1/2 hours of straight video watching with wifi turned off. I do know that I was surfing on wifi for a good portion of yesterday and still had a quarter of my battery left. Not too shabby.

I think the problem is in my school's wireless. It's pretty shaky, and every time I take my phone out of sleep, it says it's on EDGE, and when I unlock it, it goes onto WiFi. I think that it is constantly connecting/disconnecting from WiFi, causing the battery to drain more. Does anyone know if this would be happening while it was in sleep mode?

I charged near fully last night pulled off charger at 11pm, standby all night until 6am then mainly SMS with one call, a little surfing and email checking. I'm at 20% 3:41 the next day. Personally I think this blows as far as battery life is concerned I don't feel I've done enough today for it to be less than say 50%. No music, no video AND it was hooked into my car and supposedly charging for about 1.5 hours in there...what gives?
Phone says 1 day 5 hours since last full charge on usage
2 days and 4 hours on standby since last full charge. Guess I didn't get a full one in last night...

My latest stats were 6 hours 23 minutes of usage, and almost 2 days of standby. The usage was mostly email and wifi browsing, 5 episodes of The Office, and a little over an hour of phone calls.

That seems pretty good to me based on what I was doing.

The battery icon looks to be about 30% or so right now.
Usage statistics since last full charge are:

Usage - 4 Hours, 2 Minutes
Standby - 1 Day, 7 Hours

Most of my usage has been web surfing and email via EDGE. That means that I hooked up the phone to my charger Sunday night, and at 5am Central on Monday, the charge completed. I used it all through yesterday and today, 4 hours worth, and there's still plenty of charge.

I'm debating whether I should charge it tonight or not...

I must admit...the 1st week of usage I was kind of worried about my battery life.

But today, the results dont seem so bad:

iphonebattaa1.jpg

started with some a morning regiment of about 2 hrs ipod usage
some emails and txting throughout the day
a few webpages here and there
played with beejive for 30 mins
then on the way home i watched 2 video podcasts
and pretty much been listening to the ipod

oh and of course several phone calls.

I tried to see how long my battery would last if I just used it normally as a phone and checked my email occasionally. I also sent about 15 text messages and watched around 4 YouTube videos. Went to four web sites and when all was said and done, I went almost two and a half days before the battery was dead.

The whole issue about battery life will get better as people get used to having the iPhone. When I first got mine, I always had it in my hand and was playing with it when I had nothing else to do. Battery life went pretty fast during that time. Now that I'm over the original hype, my battery lasts longer than my old cell phone that was only able to make phone calls.
