I have seen some unbelievable designs in this thread, but obviously cannot go through all 226 pages!

Anyone know where I should start? I think the VIP (is that what it's called) ones are really nice - the ones with 3x3 and really nice docks.

I've seen some really nice lock screens too +1 to the puzzle overlay one.

Is there some sort of database where I can look through and download stuff for my iPhone 4? I'm about to reset it because of some issues so it would be nice to start off with a new theme.

Yup, it's VIP. Theres a lot of stuff over at Modmyi as well. This thread is pretty much the data base lol. There's some stuff on Dbar, deviantart, and Macthemes.

lmao I guess the easiest way would be to go through the entire thread, find one that I like, quote it, and ask how it's done?

But those websites...do they explain what to download and where to put it and where? What's the best place to start?

I just want a really simple style with a nice weather/date widget and a cool lock screen. I'll probably go with the puzzle overlay one in that case.

Is there any place that ranks favorites by people or something lol there are just so many options and it's so overwhelming!

Edit: Perhaps maybe give me which pages I should go through? Maybe the last 10? 20? 30? 50!? :D

We've all been new to this. Don't worry about asking questions. :D

A good place to start for someone that's new is to grab the ThemeIt app off Cydia. There are lots of great themes on there (including VIP), though I don't believe they have any free ones up yet (if you just wanted to try it out). However, $3 isn't bad at all for some really comprehensive themes (ones on there will generally include icons, loading screens for some apps, and a UI makeover). There's not much you have to do after downloading it, so the setup is minimal.

Now, if you're wanting to get into widgets, there's a little more setup involved, especially if they have weather. Not a big deal, though, and you'll get the hang of it quickly. People are very helpful and will walk you through how to do all this stuff.

First and foremost, you're gonna need WinterBoard from Cydia to manage the themes, OpenSSH so you can get into the file system to tweak things (or add or remove themes you want to manually put on the phone), and a ssh program for your PC or Mac like WinSCP (windows) or Cyberduck (mac). I also like iFunbox for Windows...it's really easy to drop files into your phone, though I haven't figured out how to open a html document through it yet...lol.

Most people are self-taught at this. Just do a lot of reading and Google anything you don't get or understand.

Welcome to the obsession! :D

I recommend iPhone explorer if your using a Mac.

Wow thanks a lot for the great starting tutorial. Nice to know that people are willing to help. Also I'm not COMPLETELY new at this. I've used SSH, Winterboard, iFile, and OpenSSH and stuff before so I know what's going on.

I'm mostly confused about where to get the files to get it to look like how I want it. I know that I have to edit files for widgets and stuff, just don't know how I can get like a complete database of options that I have. I can usually figure stuff out if I can have a start lol. So any other ideas aside from ThemeIt?

I'm about to restore my phone and I'll have Cydia and Winterboard. I'll also try and find some stuffs that I like in this thread so I can have some idea about how to get what I want.

I don't know if you plan on making themes yourself, but I suppose you could if your good with HTML code and Photoshop. As far as where to get the files, their all in the downloads posted in this thread. Once downloaded, tweaking is all you really need to do in order to get it how you like.

Haha no I didn't mean making my own themes. I just meant that I have a personal rule that I don't pay for themes or customization mods or else once I start, I'll blow all my money away.

Honestly, I'd go through the whole thing. Any question you could possibly ask is almost certainly answered in here somewhere. But the themes in the last 50 pages or so are typically either written for the current firmware or have been updated to work with it. Older widgets may not work on your current setup.

And ditto to everything ECUPirate44 and KentuckyHouse said. Most of us are self taught, and would much rather play with our own phones than spend hours documenting exactly HOW to do it. (Documenting the whole process is tough and it's boring--I've done technical writing, and it's a PITA. We're usually pretty good about answering a couple of questions once you get started though.) You're not going to find a ton of tutorials out there for that reason, and because Apple often changes things with each new firmware revision, which renders an old tutorial out of date rather quickly. As I said, nearly anything you'd ever need to know is in this thread somewhere.

There's no database of this kind of stuff. No one's taken the time to do that (same issue as with documentation), and I honestly can't imagine anyone doing so, nice as it would be to have one. New full themes and partial themes and widgets are being created daily. Most of them usually find their way here, but MacThemes & ModMyI are sometimes good places to find things as well.

I'd suggest you start by finding one set of icons, and one widget you want to configure. Then tell us what you want to do with the widget and I'm sure we can help you get started with that.

Welcome to the party. Be forewarned, it's addicting as hell. :D

Gotcha. Then id look at the Zorsha theme on Macthemes. Theres no sense in downloading themeit as everything on it right now is paid.

MacThemes is probably the best bet indeed for free themes. I'd also look at EdiusHD over there in addition to Zorsha. Lots of people creating additional icons for both of those. I get not wanting to pay because you'll run though a ton of money--I try to do the same for the same reason, though I'll make the occasional exception for an icon set I know I'll love. I have just three paid themes ranging from $1 - $3 (though there's a dozen more I'd love to have)--and the two themes I go back to most frequently are both free.

When you say go through MacThemes, you mean the forums right? Like all of their threads in the iOS releases section?

I guess I can do that and also go through the majority of this thread because at least this way, it's all in one place and I just have to find a design I like and I know someone on this board will be nice enough to walk me through it.

Thanks for all your guys' help so far. I guess I'll go through the last 50 or so pages. There's got to be some wonderful stuff in there.

Yep--but since they close threads that haven't been replied to in two months, most of the good/active stuff is on the first couple of pages. It won't be too hard.

After reading through the last 30-40 pages of this thread, I've seen some incredible stuff and saved images of what I really liked. I was hoping if I post the images here, people can help me to get my iPhone to look like that because most of these pictures were posted but not any download links to them.

I basically realized that there are four parts to this whole process: Lockscreen and it's way of unlocking, Clock/Weather on LS widget, Springboard icons/theme, Springboard Widgets. After going through the thread, I've found some of what I want. Oh and a 5th! The status bar!

My favorite was the Puzzle Overlay as it's so unique but it doesn't have weather :( Maybe Schendi can take out another puzzle piece and implement weather? That would be perfect!

Is there anyway to get a weather on this LS and or possibly change the wallpaper to something else, like the 2nd link?

I also loved the status bar of that. I hate the battery icon so seeing just the percentage is new and I liked the signal bars too, though I've seen some fantastic ones for that too.

Now for the springboard, I realized I love the VIP look with a 3x4 or 3x3 look but haven't been able to find an icon set I like. Nor have I been able to find a complete widget for my LS.

Can anyone help me find one like this:

http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k570/supervixen77/536ce01b.jpg but I want the time/date and weather to be separate, with the city showing too for the weather. Yes I know, oh so specific haha. I really like the look of that one though.

Lastly, which theme is this:

I love the wallpaper and the style, but maybe a different set of icons?

Sorry for the long post and actually I wouldn't even be surprised if it went ignored but I'm pretty bored and I go back to school in a week and I have nothing else to do. So if you got tips - fire them away or else I'll figure it out eventually :D

Thanks!

Unfortunately, it's not a Notes icon or I would--it's from Notebooks for iPhone from the app store, which I use in place of Notes because it's about 10,000x better. That's actually the stock icon, so it's a different size from Notes and doesn't come with rounded corners (the app mask does those). It just happens to work perfectly with this set though.

I did just change the biteSMS icon to a milder color. I love pink, as you all know, but the included one was too much even for ME! (and the Messages one is the same color as the phone app, meh. Yes, I'm picky.) If anyone wants that (screenshot's been updated with the new version), let me know.

I've also asked the designer for a Tasks type icon (the one you see is one from our Icon Requests thread) and to make an app store sized camera icon for those of us who use apps like Camera+.

Could I please get your bitesms?? I like pink too but in a soft color tone and I need to use sunglasses now if I use bitesms

Sure thing! Just be sure to rename it. (should be icon@2x.png for iPhone 4) Mine's purple, rather than pink, but I liked the more bluish color in conjunction with the rest of the icons. Here's a softer, slightly lighter pink one for the bite traditionalists as well:
