No, it's not. It's ~$50 per year, retail, for Xbox Live Gold, which is what allows you to play games online. But what he bought isn't even the subscription card, it's MS points, which is the currency used to buy XBL Arcade games, rent movies, etc.

I've never played XBL so I'll go by what you say.

Even though I prefer My PS3 over my XBOX I'm always on my 360. XBL is way ahead of PSN. Pretty much because XBOX LIVE is a main component of XBOX. Where as the PSN was just kind of a after thought. Although Sony is improving it. Until we see some In Game XMB and In Game Private chats then I'm going to stick to XBOX. Well unless HOME comes out first

Speaking of XBL I just bought a 1 month card a few weeks ago. Forgot all about that.
