They are Onitsuka Tigers (Asics) - Runspark.

Yep, and YES they are comfortable! They are an excellent shoe. I highly recommend them.

Also i bought them from Zappos. They have the most amazing service. They upgraded my shipping to "1 day air" when i choose the free shipping. I would definitely buy from them again.

Another big load of gear got thrown out at uni today, so I got on IRC & within 5 minutes a group of us were down to carry away anything valuable/useful/fun. I made off with another UPS, again it probably just needs £20 of new batteries to be fully operational.

It switches instantiously from the mains to the battery, and your session continues as before.

Mine is good for about 37 minutes, given the modem, speakers, etc, and the iMac, that I have plugged into it.

Oh yeah, my Time Machine drive too.

Plenty of time to do a safe shut-down if the outage lasts more then 30 minutes.

UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply.

Essentially, it's a big-ass battery & a big-ass transformer. You plug your computers/monitors/etc. into it & if there's a power cut it keeps your computers/monitors/etc/ going on battery power. Small units of this size aren't neccessarily designed to keep you going all the way through the cut, but instead they give you enough time to finish whatever you're doing, save any open documents & shut down cleanly.

The 500VA will keep my Linux PC & my firewall PC & network switch running for 20-25 minutes. Because my main monitor is a big CRT I don't have that on the same unit, but my Linux PC runs a daemon that will automatically save & shut down when the UPS tells it that it's battery is running low. If I buy new batteries for the bigger ones I'll probably end up having Linux PC on the 600VA, monitor on the 650VA & firewall PC & switch on the 500VA. That should keep everything important going for ~30 minutes.

So it kicks on b4 the comp even goes off?
Precisely.

We have one at work on our CAD mill, and when the power goes out, that split second it takes for the battery to kick in is enough to stop the bit on the mill and have the tip snap off. So basically whenever the power goes out while the mill is running it costs us $100. Pretty painful, I know.

That's either because you have a crap UPS or it simply isn't beefy enough. If the latter, you should invest in one with a big set of caps in it to power the mill whilst it's switching to the batts.
