And 2 Seagate 500GB hard drives

I was going to wait for the Firewire Drobo, but I figured I'd save myself $150 and stick with the older USB version, which for my uses, is plenty fast.

Question: How loud is that thing? Does it seal off most of the noise pretty well? Could it be used in a small office setting, or does it need to be kept in its own room? :)

So far, it's been completely silent, other than the noise of hard drives spinning. It's in my bedroom right now and doing fine. I think it might get a little louder when the fans kick in, but it can't be any worse than my old hard drive (a Guardian Maximus) which sounded like a 747 taking off. And I hear the new Firewire Drobos are supposed to be even quieter.

UPS Man (or Woman, wasn't actually here for delivery) just dropped it off today. Never mind that I don't actually know an iota of C, I can still give a thumbs up, dammit!

Darnit, you're going to make me spend money! You were supposed to say, oh that new Firewire one can actually wake the dead when it's idle. :p

I'm working out in my head who I need to rotate external hard drives to so that I can justify getting the FW model.

Clarence? Where?

New Canon Rebel XT w/ Kit Lens
Sears
$330 - 10% clearance + tax = ~$330.

If you're interested, call your local Sears and ask if they have any (Look up the item number on the web. I called and asked the first time and the guy in the electronics department didn't know what a DSLR was). There was one in my local Sears and also another a few towns north of mine (which I called first).

The Drobe isn't designed for a 'small office setting' but more for home users. For an office setup there are far better choices around.

can't wait to play with it!

Hope it doesnt cause the device to crawl like 2.0 has done to my iPhone. Never before have I had to restart my iPhone so many times because Safari brings the entire device to a halt, or have I had to go to the home screen and back into SMS because the keyboard is lagging like crazy. Get 2.0.1 out Apple, please.

That clinches it, I must have a defective one. Mine sounds like a small jet, even when all the drives are asleep!

Edit: And their tech support now says it may be a dying fan. They'll let me know based on the diagnostic info I sent! I want a silent one too dammit!
