Welp, Surface Laptop had massive backlight bleed so back that went, and today's delivery of stuff to cobble Windows 10 onto my Mac went missing - and the iMac is acting up; so I just bought a brand new base spec Acer Ultra Slim Swift 3.

I've been meaning to get a stand to replace the bare lightening cable for a while, so when a local retailer had 40% off this week I couldn't say no.

I bought these:

... because The Dekalog is a masterwork that anyone serious about cinema, literature, ethics, philosophy or religion should see (and I'm long overdue upgrading my shoddy DVD set). Also because Rhino Records is including out-of-print quad (4.0) and mono mixes at a reasonable enough price point that, despite not being a huge Doors fan, I want to vote my dollar in hopes of more such niche support. Stax... I didn't know they were updating the decade-old 2-CD set with a third CD — one more item off my wishlist.

nice, but none of those look like they were 'deeply discounted' at all though

You think that's bad, I just bought these, which on Amazon/iTunes would'a cost about $20-$30 total. I'd explain why this added expense actually makes sense but I suspect that's not the point of your post. Honestly, I can't figure the point of your post except to take a dig (or as a quick'n'dirty pun on the site name). So, with that in mind, dig in maestro!
  1. Ray Charles' The Genius After Dark (8 songs, 38 minutes, otherwise unavailable mono recorded in 1963) on hi-res SACD (about $22.50)
  2. Sam Cooke's Night Beat (12 songs, 38 minutes, otherwise unavailable 3-channel stereo recorded in 1961) on hi-res SACD (about $22.50)
  3. Sly & the Family Stone's Greatest Hits (12 songs, 37 minutes, otherwise unavailable original mono and quad/4.0 mixes) (about $22.50)
  4. Cowboy Junkies Trinity Sessions (12 songs; 42 minutes) (hi-res stereo remaster) (about $22.50)
  • To underscore how bad a deal this is: I spent $90 on 44 songs (so about $2/track), $90 four discs, on 125 minutes of music on 30-55 year-old music I could get decent quality copies off for 1/3 the price. The worst part? Not only would I do it again... I probably will. Soon and again. Oh, and if you want in on a similarly crap deal, Acoustic Sounds still has its 20%-off sale going on.

As to the post you quoted, actually, those were very good deals (if the merchandise is to one's taste). Even without the discount line right above the total these were reasonable deals. The Doors quad mix sound excellent (better, I've read, than the out-of-print disc that goes for 8 times the cost of the set I bought). After the discount, Dekalog hasn't been that cheap and likely won't ever be. True, I'd have liked to import the Arrow video version with a higher bitrate video encode and lack of time compression to account for the 24 vs. 25 fps Europe vs. US standards issue, but then I'd have to re-buy the two short films and spend $100 to add a region-free mod to my Blu-ray/DVD/DVD-A/SACD player. Still it'd be worth it, but this is good enough for me.

If you got this far, thanks for your post. I'm on a voluntary forum hiatus but when I got the notification I thought it might be interesting content-wise because I love this stuff. It wasn't really, but this has been fun.

A new project;

ELAC-Active-Monitor-AM-150_1.jpg

this time an interesting pair of active speakers, apparently the other one is completely silent... but the price was compelling ;)

I've had mine for a couple months and it's been a blast to use. The technology is very mature, I've been impressed with everything.
Same here - I just purchased some ND filters for it to help with the videos that I’m going to shoot with it. I’ll be heading up to Galena Illinois to get some footage and I’m extremely excited to get to use it up there. I’m still shocked at how easy these are to fly.

Yeah ND filters are a good idea. In normal daylight though ND32 seems to be the only useful one. ND16 just before sunset.

The only real issue I have with this drone is trying to find new places to take it as you will get bored of the same places to fly it. Obviously not a DJI problem.

And that's why I never bought one. I can't think of many places where I could fly it where I live.

Trying to find a mouse that is comfortable with the new laptop, so ordered a 3rd one.

Also giving Donnie Yen another look...in these

Lost Bladesman.png

^ I owned a bootleg of the Lost Bladesman years ago, and wasn't too keen on Yen as Guan Yu from a dramatic perspective. But noticing Yen's Rogue One co-star Jiang Wen is also in this and Andy On (who is the only youngish HK martial artist actor who I can watch without groaning.) Trying again especially since they were cheap enough for me jump.

Kung Fu Killer:Jungle.png

^ *a.k.a. Kung Fu Jungle. This looks dumb as hell, but I couldn't resist seeing one of my favorite Shaw Brothers gents in a cameo, which will hopefully justify buying it.

There's a slew of other movies I am looking at, but I have to remain thrifty right now.
