Alright, they finally showed up yesterday, so here's a quick unsolicited review:
Sound quality is decent. They seemed exactly like EarPods at first, but I started to realize the instrument separation is bit more noticeable and the sound has more depth to it.
Convenience cannot be understated. No on button, no off button, no waiting for one to pair with the other while you hold down a button, and no shutting them off while switching from iOS to OS X. They don't even feel like Bluetooth earbuds; it's sort of surreal.
Siri integration is seamless for the most part. I've head other "truly wireless" earbuds, and Siri would take forever to connect, and then you'd either speak too soon or too late and it'd cut off your request. Ugh. Not the case with AirPods.
The charging case is… really fun to play with. It's smaller than I anticipated, and it's held shut with a magnet and
open with a magnet. It might be a Polymagnet (
minute and a half Polymagnet demo). It pops open by itself, prevents accidental shutting, and then can be flicked closed like a Zippo. Not important or expected, yes, but I can't stop playing with it.
Once annoyance I have with it is the limited functionality of the tap detection. As far as I know, each AirPod can perform
one function, and that's it. I've set the right to play/pause and the left to invoke Siri. I want to single and triple tap!
Overall, the seamlessness and use of magnets makes this feel like a classic Apple product circa 2005. Super cool.
