LONG time lurker, first time poster. Decided to make an account and contribute instead of just reading.

My humble set up that switches up time to time. In the pic is my MBP Retina, 3TB WD Essential Hard Drive, Samsung 23" LCD (but with the retina display, find it hard to be using any monitor with it lol).

Will post time to time with any updates.

Cheers

I understand your problem.
I have a 24" ACD, but I just can't use it with my R-MBP - everything looks blurry.

I changed it again because the file cabinet was annoying there. I found a shelf from ikea in the garage and used that to support the weight from legs to legs.

So I have been following the picture threads for awhile now. Your desk keeps jumping out at me but from what I understand, the glass is very thin on the permanently flat side. So you can't put a thunderbolt display on that side at all?

With Tuesdays announcement I was so disappointed with what Apple had done to the iMac line, specifically the 21.5'' model, I went out and bought the previous generation from Stormfront in York, before stocks dwindled.

The new 2012 21.5'' model has been made substantially worse. It has a much slower 5400RPM hard drive, no user upgradable ram, but the biggest nail in the coffin for me was the lack of an optical drive. Apple also had the cheek to charge £99 more for the new one over the previous model. I shoot wedding photography and am currently in the process of archiving old family VHS tapes onto DVD so an optical drive is a must, the lack of FireWire on the new ones is also a bit annoying. I know you can buy an external optical disk drive and thunderbolt firewire adaptor, but why should I even need to? Especially for a desktop machine, making it thin is as pointless as a chocolate fireguard.

The iMac I went for was the basic spec 2.5Ghz and its a million times faster than the old 2.53Ghz C2D in my MBP. I'm intending soon to put in 32GB RAM and i'll be all set. Maybe a external thunderbolt drive when costs come down too.

So seems like this model iMac, is the last of the greats. As Apple have now iPadified it, making it more like a disposable un-upgradable portable devices like an iPhone/iPad.

The G-Tech isn't bad actually, its a rather good drive. It does suffer mounting issues sometimes when it's left switch on for a good few hours of the computer being idle, but normally its fine.

Agreed. There is no point in making a desktop computer as thin as possible, especially when the thickness is in a place you can't see it (who even looks at the side of their iMac?) and it takes away functionality. 27" model doesn't seem to be a completely lost cause at least, with user-upgradeable RAM and a 7200 RPM hard drive. Can't wait for the teardown to make my final diagnosis though.

Hope you got a deal on that "last gen" iMac at least

PS: I do disagree with one thing... I would consider "the last of the greats" to be the G4 iMac, which was by far the most beautiful computer Apple has ever made, while still retaining function. Update it with modern tech and a 27" display, and damn, that would be one hell of a machine. Since 2006, iMac has just been a laptop on a stick.

That would be awesome I could see it come back when mini itx boards are on point.

The desk & shelf is Ikea, but nah the chair was from a local company What sells vintage/retro styled Furniture. I got it because my full room is a 70's space age theme, I have quite a few vintage electronics and what not about the room and I thought it looked pretty retro.

I could be wrong, but don't the previous gen iMacs only hold 16GB of RAM?

I thought the new iMacs were the only ones that hold 32.

I'm quite unsure what you would need 32GB of RAM for, but hey.. do it up (if you can). I currently have 12 in mine (same configuration) and i've never had any problems (I am a photographer as well).

Apple only offered up to 16gb as a build to order model. You can however get 32gb from a third party.

Ahh, I was unaware. I thought they could only hold 16gb. I have one and used the Crucial memory tool and that told me it could only hold 16gb as well.. hmm

Oh well, i'll never, ever need that much, haha.. thanks!

For those with friends that are Apple employees if you want the older iMacs wait until the new ones hit the shelves. Apple employees get ridiculous discounts on last generation ones and it does not count against their one full discount per a year.

I agree. I love my 27" that I got in 2010. I actually removed the optical drive to add an SSD, but I still have an external blu-ray drive on my desk, which I use once in a while. The only thing that I am interested in with the new iMacs is the screen quality, and how much better it might be from mine. The design is OK, but it isnt something extraordinary that has to make me go and switch to.

yeah the previous gen models as well the 2010 i3's have always been able to support 32GB RAM ram. I can get the 4x 8GB kit for less than £115. I think its worth it just to put the max in, considering in 2009 I paid 160 quid for 8GB RAM for my MacBook Pro LOL and that was rather cheap at the time. I probably never would use that much ram, but i'd never to worry about upgrading in the next few years down the line.

yeah well I got my education discount on mine, with me being a Uni student. Got the Machine for £981 in total and that included Apple Care for only £40 so I thought it was worth it :D

Oh really? Like how much of a discount if you could estimate?
