Well I finally got around to building my own desk. All I wanted was a large, clean looking work surface, so I settled on white pine boards on a subframe with steel legs. I did it all today, and I just finished getting everything set back up on it (the rest of the room is a complete disaster right now, I managed to make this corner look good for the pics ;) ).

You can see my past workstation arrangements here.

wow i really like you setup.. its so clean and contemporary.. i used to be like into the old dark wood etc but urs is far better

mrogers: Love the setup!

I've been trying to build a desk myself and had a couple of questions: How did you attach the legs, and how did you brace the desk to keep it from sagging?

Thanks!

Here's a rendering of the design I did in Google SketchUp. As you can see from the underside, the perimeter of the surface (which is actually four 1x8 boards) is rimmed with 1x2 strips, in addition to three more running across the middle from front to back. This is all glued and screwed together. The legs, although you can't see it in the rendering, have flanges that come out slightly on the top with screw holes. They're just screwed into the underside of the surface through those shims I have on there. It is pretty stable. There doesn't seem to be any flex happening at all in the surface, but I'm considering putting a fifth leg in the center back (right under where the iMac sits) just to be safe.

I got the design idea from another member here on the forums. I believe his was 7 feet long.

Cool! I'll have to try something like that when I build mine, though I won't need as much bracing because it's only 60" long and 27" deep.

iPhone Baby

pic #1.....I just moved and will have new setup pics shortly....peace

It is 6 feet long by 29 inches deep. The surface is composed of four six-foot long 1x8 inch boards, and since an "8 inch" board is actually 7.25" wide, with four of them you get 29 inches.

Haha, I know what you're all thinking!!!

Where did he get that KOMONO OWL ???

G4 PowerBook 1.67, Dual 450 G4 server at the back, controlled with Remote Desktop 3.0

...oh and the Owl was a gift, it's a money box.

Rich.
