So, I did take a break (doing the DTP work of an art-magazine right now) and I did take a picture of my messy desk:

specs please of your macmini all all that storage attached to it :D

Here you go:
Mac mini early 2009
CPU 2.0 GHz
RAM 4 GB DDR (2x2) So-dimm 1066 MHz
internal storage: Samsung 250 GB/8 MB/ 5400 rpm SATA
internal DVD-burner: the standard one
OS: MacOS X Leopard 10.5.8, Windows XP Professional SP-3 in Bootcamp and through WMWare Fusion, Ubuntu Linux in VMWare Fusion

External enclosures (from right to left):

1.) WD 250 GB SATA HDD/16 MB/7200 rpm in the silver aluminium case, connected trough USB (used for my NTFS files and in bootcamp)

2.) under the Mac mini, there is a MacPower case with a second WD 250 GB HDD (same specs as above), connected trough Firewire 400, used for TimeMachine backup and for SuperDuper cloning (the drive is splitted into two partitions)

3.) an dual aluminium case with two green WD 500 GB HDDs (SATA, 7200 rpm/32 MB) connected trough FW400 as my general achive, configured as software RAID-1 mirror

4.) under the aluminium HDD case, there is a 5,25" Alu box with a Samsung DVD-RW drive installed, connected trough USB

5.) on the far side there is a D-link 323 NAS enclosuer with two WD 320 GB HDDs installed, connected to my 1-Gbit ethernet network. It is configured as a RAID-1, using mostly for movies, photos etc. (my sisters family is using it mostly for family stuff) but because I have a UPS here, it is connected to it

6.) you see a smaller 2,5" HDD box (Akasa blue Alu) in front of the external DVD-burner. It is connected to a 7-port Equip USB port. It has and old 40" GB PATA HDD installed from an old Windows notebook, but works as it should. This is my main storage that I am taking everywhere with me.

I do however have two USB sticks too - an older 512 MB and a newer 16 GB (you never know, when you need free space).

Everything connected to a 850 VA UPS.

Yeah, they are somehow outdated, but they still work. I will not change/replace them until they do, what they should.

Why don't you post your setup, room anyway?

Unless you just want to display static information, like some tables, iTunes, or chats, you don't want to use these things.
Playing videos, even in a very small window is not possible and even moving windows around lags like hell.

As all of them use the same technology, it does not matter which one you buy, all of them are pretty much the same.
They cost about 100€ here in Europe, but they are definitely not worth it!

Mmm, well, I was thinking of straight up just Adium/iTunes, but if they lag just moving windows, not worth the prices I've been looking at. Too bad.

One thru Mini disply Port, one thru some sort of USB>DVI Dongle

First gen Macbook Pro's came with DVI :)

mine doesn't lag at all...

I can watch videos, move windows, etc. with no lag

I use the EVGA UV 16+ usb adaptor, it was $70.

Strange. I tried mine, I can't even remember from which company it was, with 1680x1050 and it wasn't smooth at all.
Maybe the OS X drivers were not well-engineered at that time, I don't know.
Anyway, I would not buy such a thing again.
Forcing a display signal through an USB port is far from ideal.
