I was going to make a thread for people to post their set-ups but since this dead on exists, I thought it would be better to try and bring it back to life :)

Here is mine:

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64 in Gnome classic mode. The dock is Docky with the smoke theme in 3D and the system theme is the Radiance theme built into Ubuntu. I am now using Ubuntu as the only OS on my computer! Goodbye OS X and Windows! Very happy with it. It is a new install so am still tweaking things getting it just how I like it :)

Unity doesn't even work all that well on full-powered desktops in some cases. Each release seems to come with new features in Unity but you never know if the desktop will become more or less responsive each time. On my machines I haven't found any to run as well as 12.04 yet (12.10, 13.04) and since it's an LTS it'll stay for a bit. But I'm running it with Cinnamon as the desktop environment because it's quite a bit snappier than Unity and I am no longer a fan of Gnome in any way, shape or form. I used to love it, but now it's Cinnamon or KDE for me.

So to answer the question, you really need to try it out on your hardware to know if it's good on it or not. It changes so much in performance each release. But, I can say it's dog slow on my Acer C7 Chromebook with Celeron processor and 2GB RAM, which is probably similar in specs to a netbook.

Here's mine. Ubuntu 12.04 on a custom-built PC, using Docky and some wallpaper from InterfaceLift.

Here's my desktop on my HP mini-110 netbook running Lubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail). Lubuntu is based on Ubuntu, but it uses the minimal desktop LXDE and light-weight apps for speed and energy-efficiency.

I'll post a true shot in a few days.

In the meantime, because I enjoyed the simplicity and sanity of Gnome Web in PC-BSD, here's epiphany on Mavericks viewing pre-release Safari 8 in a MacRumors topic about screenshots of Yosemite:

Absolutely hated the "unity" desktop, so I got the classic "Flashback" in 14.04 LTS.
