All the above preamps are fantastic.

Also, as far as decks go, you can't go far wrong with the new Rega Planar 3. It's got one of the best tonearms of any record deck out there (something Linn have been very envious of).

Amps, Rotel are just about the best with absolute budget kit, and the new B&W 685s are absolutely, 100% gorgeous speakers. They sound like £500 speakers, but with a much lower price tag (£280).

Or, you could buy a USB one [turntable], play through your Mac and record to it as well.

No, I haven't yet heard a single USB turntable which sounds at all decent. The whole point in vinyl is that it sounds better than CD, otherwise nobody would use it. Those USB record decks are absolute rubbish, and the difference between different record decks is huge in comparison between different CD players.

I'll take my Technics 1200 MK2's over any other turntable :) (but that's because i use them for djing, hehe)

They're great for DJing, some of the best decks money can buy. However, as for how they sound in a home setup, better decks can be bought. £150 on a Project deck will give much much sound than any SL1000 or 1200 etc...

I want to get myself some SL1200s though, trying to pick them up cheap...

I inherited my Dad's vinyl collection (he's not dead he just gave them to me one day) and I finally got around to buying a record player...

Anyway, it's all about Man, Gong, The Outlaws and The Tubes with him.

Anyway, it's all about DJ Shadow - Endtroducing... By far one of my favourite albums ever.

Hey guys,

Not to go too off topic, but does anyone have any recommendations for someone looking to get into vinyl?

Not looking to discuss the merits of starting a record collection in 2007, but rather advice on how to buy a record player and whether anything else is required to get it going (ie. will I be able to hook it up to modern speakers?).

Thanks.

For superb phono preamps, check out brands such as NAD, Cambridge Audio, Creek. For some of the best, most affordable, true hi-fi turntables, look no further than Rega, though Pro-Ject also gets good reviews.

Definitely look at Pro-ject if you want an "audiophile" table. Pro-ject is underrated IMO. Excellent tables for the money. In fact, I auditioned a Rega P2 and Pro-Ject Xpression II and thought the Pro-ject was superior. It has an excellent carbon fiber tonearm. So that's what I kept. And it was $100 less.

Can we see photos of the Top 2 listed in bold PLEASE!

Those right there are pure universal currency! Keep them away from sun & heat and pass them down to children who'll do the same.

If you EVER consider selling those PLEASE PM me first please~! I'd purchase those before any Mac, & I'm in desperate need of a Mac.

if your after a copy of kind of blue to listen to, i'd recommend the classic records reissue of it.

it is without doubt the best example of the album available.

I only have 5 vinyl records:
Miles Davis - Tutu
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene
Jean Michel Jarre - Equinoxe

Also, not that I'm interested in this version, but what can you tell me about the sound quality of the Pro-Ject Debut III USB?

BBBBBBBBUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMPPPPPPPPPPP :p

My dad ran a record store in college, so I have 100 "main" vinyls that I inherited from my parents, plus another 30-40 "generic" ones (classical compilations, random female pop record that nobody remembers from my mom, etc.). Nothing is that rare, but I still have a few highlights.

*Sgt. Peppers Picture Disc
Sgt.%20Pepper%20Picture%20Disc.JPG

*Knowdaverbs- The Action Figure (a Christian rap vinyl that I got at a concert a few years back)
*The Legendary Stardust Cowboy-Paralyzed (one of the worst albums ever made. I'm serious)
316_img.jpg

*Napoleon IV-They're Going to Take Me Away Haha
3142666899_bd5d5c22a8.jpg

*Captain Beyond (best album cover ever)
captain_beyond_1972_20060810071429.jpg

A few other, more common vinyls that I love include:
*Pink Floyd-The Wall
*Pink Floyd-Animals
*ELP-Tarkus
*Styx-Pieces of Eight
*Sex Pistols-Never Mind the Bollocks...
