PowerMac G6 at WWDC?

I was thinking about why Apple would boost the speeds of the G5s so near to WWDC, and i had a very optomistic idea that maybe all they have done is overclock or slightly 'pimped up' the original G5s in order to sell off the remaining units before releaseing a new generation of PowerMac at WWDC next month.

Its very optomistic but i would like to think it might happen. Good few years back they anounced the new G3s at WWDC and they were shipping the next day as far as i remember. I think the same was true with G5s. Maybe we're in for a nice supprise come early June

What you guys think? I know there have been no rumours of this anywhere, its just a nice little conspiracy i've come up with

The G5 came out in 2003. The G4 came out in 1999. It took 4 years before it went from G4 to G5. We still have another 2 to 3 years before we hit G6. It might happen sooner, what with all the news of Cell processors and multi-cores.

oh well, i was kinda hopeing for some new technology to come out at WWDC cos i plan to buy a new G5 shortly after that. I feel abit uneasy about spening £1500 on 2 year old technology. Especialy when everyone on here slag Apple off for having great software but bad hardware.

Seems a shame they havn't realy done much with the machines in 2 years, minus a very small processor upgrade.

Do you think Apple will continue to make G5s but with faster proccessors during the next year or so, same as has been done with the G4s, which go from like 400Hz to dual 1.47 or somthing.

Anyone recon there will be any update to the G5 line at WWDC?

A little OT, but the G5 PowerMacs didn't ship for several weeks (or even months) after the introduction at WWDC. This was true for most of the things introduced by Apple in the last months (or even years).

That may be, but would you search for "G6" or "Apple G6" / "PowerMac G6"?

What happens if Pontiac wants to introduce a G7 later on? Would THEY skip it for the sake of search engine rankings?

Thanks for saving me that comment, the g5 is only partway through its lifespan, and the next incarnation as we all know is in the powerbook, but to tell the date on that is uncertain.

So maybe we're all in for an unexpected treat in June. I'm sure the guys at Apple knew they were taking the piss with their recent G5 upgrades. We all do. Hopefuly there will some nice treats on display next month. At least in the form of faster/better bits for the PowerMacs

G6 is not a millions miles away

It took IBM approximately a year to develop the GPUL from the Power4 core that they had.

The Power5 was being developed at the same time, and has now been around for well over 6 months.

I would suggest, a likely debut for the G6 would be WWDC in a years time.

On the other hand, I would also say that the G5 and its evolving derivatives have plenty of life left in them yet... multiple cores, and speed boosts are still on the cards for the current generation of architecture.

I think it is safe to assume that Macs will be running at 3.2 GHz by next year.

'As we all know?' I think most of us are pretty certain there won't be a mobile G5. It's not just about advancing to a next generation processor, the G5's architecture differs very much from the G4 and with it's long pipeline it's just not build for energy efficient mobile purposes. There will certainly be something that replaces the G4, but it wont be the G5.

Watchout for WWDC next year

Think how cool next years WWDC will be. The PS3 will have been released in May, or whenever. There will be a $400 console kicking around with CELL, Blu-Ray and some tripped out graphics card. Think of the PowerMac update.

I would say that at WWDC we may see the end of the single 1.8GHz G5 PM, and apple may finally introduce a 3GHz model, so that the PM line are dual across the range and have Clocks of 2.0, 2.3, 2.7 and 3. It kinda makes sense to me.
The 1.8 at the moment sucks, check out this to see how much of an outdated system they are.
I know another re-shuffle of the range would be somewhat unprecedented, but the clock speed family I outlined above makes sense to me

would be nice if its true. Of course, the chips used in those boxes don't have any close relation to the G5 really, so they aren't an accurate predictor.

great! i am going to get a Powerbook and will be happy with it but then probaly will get a Mac desktop (Mabye a windows just for gaming) i can build own so will save me ALOT of money... Not sure to get PowerMac when come out faster with better graphics or just get a PC and pray to god it dosn't crash..

I think Apple might have something up its sleeve but not G6.

Reasoning behind this is as follows. There has been a clamour for a while now about PCI-Express for GFX on the logic board. It would seem to me, that if Apple was planning on having the current revision around for a reasonable amount of time, that they would have spent the time reworking the logic board for PCI-Express based graphics cards.

The fact that they havn't, suggests to me that it isn't worth the effort because this logic board is soon going to be replaced by one that supports something new (read multi-core G5's) in the pretty near future.

Am probably miles off but it is something to think about.

Sorry I was just playing devils advocate.

It's difficult to imagine that Apple would even contemplate another PowerMac update so soon after the last update, not matter how disappointing that update was. 6-9 months seems to be the update window for Apple as of late, not 2-3 months.

Same goes for the PowerBook. Sorry.

Seriously, the G5 still has a bit of life left in it. We still haven't seen it in a portable yet for God's sake. C'mon Apple!

There is no reason to skip G6 as a model name. Canon's Powershot line of cameras has had G1, G2, G3, G5, G6, and G7 models, too. "G" simply stands for "generation" which is why G# is a prevalent moniker.
