Is it normal to have the site down during the night really?

I obviously don't know about the US but it has happened quite regularly in aus where the apple store has gone down at this time of night and come back up with a new product. This happened with both recent MBPs and the iMac before that.

Maybe the store is being updated out of the US at a less unreasonable hour.

Do you have any idea in these cases how long it has stayed down before returning with new products?

Don't be such a nervous nellie. There was some guy here during the U.S. launch who skipped class so he wouldn't miss the opening preorder salvo. Totally necessary and he probably felt silly seeing the preorder period continue for weeks. That is what I'm trying to tell you -- there is no need to freak out. If you order anytime tomorrow you'll be fine. You are letting all the press stories get to your head. Everyone who wanted an iPad (WiFi or 3G) on launch day got one.

Er, I think you might want to rein your combative assumptions in. Some of us asked for info. Some of us have good reasons as to why we want to order when we do - or some of us might just want to get in there first and be done with it, or some of us might get a thrill out of being there on the dot to order asap. It doesn't make us "nervous nellies" or "freaking out" as you so patronisingly remark.

Thanks for your wisdom on the subject, it's been very useful, but you can keep the holier-than-thou attitude, dude.

I might hijack this thread and ask a question of my own :p

When you preorder do they charge your card straight away or at a later date (prior to shipment of the iPad)?

Thanks :)

They only put an authorization on your card but the transactional doesn't settle until they ship the merchandise.

reserving ipad online

how does the reserve and collect work? is it a case of reserving it online or do you have to go to the shop in person. if i have to go to the store i can't make it there until the weekend and concerned stocks might have gone by then like what happened with the iphone 3G.

sorry to hijack the forum but couldn't find any answers.

its a shame that they aren't doing pick up over here :(

Would have been cool.

I see that the Birmingham Bullring AppleStore page is saying:

iPad
Buy iPad at your favourite Apple Retail Store on May 28th (while supplies last).

So I'm sure they will have them for sale on the 28th - you will just have to queue early to be sure of getting one!

I'm pre-ordering on the UK online store tomorrow morning, but might cancel that join the queue depending on what time the Bullring store plans to open etc - I'm sure more buying-in-store-on-launch-day news will emerge a few days before the 28th.

I think that there is a misconception that apple has only a certain number of units for your launch and that once they are gone thats it. One of the beauties of pre-order is that it is a sort of gauge for them. based on how many preorders they get will tell them what kind of stock they will need on launch day. you are not exactly putting your name on a physical unit tomorrow, in fact your ipad probably hasnt even been made yet. Remember that however many are reserved, there is still 3 weeks of production before the launch. so if 300,000 are pre ordered, they know to have atleast that many. if the number is greater, they have that many.

Everyone take a deep breath and relax.

You mean they don't put one to one side with a little yellow sticky thing with my name on it....damn.

I understand it completely, I've been caught up in it over every major release of everything. But, the fact that this was already done in the US and you have a point of reference, you should relax. It took us 2 weeks before they closed up shop. Im sure yours will not be less. and whether you order it on the first day or the last, it will still be there on the 28th.

Or the term "factories have a maximum output capacity"

you really dont think that apple's factories have enough capacity to keep up with demand? even with Chinese workers that work 16hour days and live on campus. They have plenty of capacity. the reason us here in the US are finding them scarce is that they dont want to flood the US market with them and have them making their way across the pond in mass quantity.

so many people here divert apple products to europe and asia when there are here first, if there was an abundance of product here and you could buy whatever you wanted. they would end up there in large numbers and completely fubar their international launches and ultimately their bottom line.

my bottom line is I dont care. I was tryng to give a little peace of mind to you guys, but since ive been told i dont understand apple mania and simple manufacturing im just gonna sit here and play with my 64GB iPad while the rest of you Fret yourselves to death over if you'll be able to pre-order. have fun.
