People do realize only 2 of the 6 Nexus phones were sold at a loss in the $349 range, the other four Nexus phones were standard flagship pricing of the day.

Nexus-One was like approx. $550
Nexus-S $600
Galaxy Nexus $650 ( Then six months later dropped to $399, but at launch was full price )
Nexus 4 $349
Nexus 5 $349
Nexus 6 $650 ( Rumored )

You have to figure these are off contract prices, so the Nexus 4 and 5 are outliers to normal phone off contract pricing. Of course it is also why they were so hard to get a hold of.

If the iPhone was only offered with off contract pricing either the phone would be forced to come down in price (see iPhone 1.0) or they won't sell near as many.

As painful as it might be for some, I personally think $650 for 32GB (and I am guessing $700 for 64GB) to be necessary.

Let's face it. While Nexus 5 was a fantastic phone at $350, it had many deficiencies when compared to flagship phones (e.g., camera, battery life, easily cracked screen).

Google needs a reference phone that can easily measure up against other Android phones and iPhone 6 Plus, not only in spec sheet (which is very easy to do) but in terms of actual user experiences. I only wish Google would improve customer service experience as well.

everything is always cheaper than the Apple alternative. The Note 4 off contract is approximately that price.

I have been trying to find the Note 4 off contract price. AT&T wants 829 for the Note 4 with no service agreement. But they also don't say what size storage said 800 device comes with.

I was leaning to buying Nexus 6 but knowing its price i will go for Note 4 instead. I was expecting 250 to 300 usd cheaper N6, bid disappointment here

So including tax and shipping we are looking at roughly $705. Eff that noise.

I dont get it. The Nex 5 was $350. How the hell do you raise the cost by 86%? The only thing lacking on the Nex 5 was subpar camera and battery.

So i guess Google got sick of selling these at a loss and decided to go the old familiar route.

86%. Really?

I wonder if it was the carriers that forced Google's hand on the pricing. Notice the N5 isn't offered by any carrier you have to get it from Google Play. Whereas the N6 will be offered by the carriers (in the US at least).

I am gonna pick one up. The price doesn't surprise me, that is what happens when you offer subsidized devices (notice how the iPhone unsub price has gone up since the first phone was released).

I didn't see this one coming - a $650 Nexus. At that price, most people looking for a big phone would go for the Note. Not sure what Google /Motorola were thinking.

I stand corrected. I bought a Note 3 about 11 months ago and it was $650 or $600 off contract, didn't think it was discounted. Assumed the price was the same.

At the end of the day, as it has already been stated, the nexus line exists primarily as a reference design for developers. Google knows that its not going bring in the same numbers either the note line or iPhone does.

On the price a part of me felt that the 450 figure was a little to good to be true. On the other hand since my last two phones both came with 16GB on board storage, i'm absolutely ecstatic that they're now finally upped their game with offering a 64GB model.

I thought the price would increase but not this much!

I wished Google had gone with one version with all the LTE frequencies instead of two separate phones. I was really looking into this considering I'm probably going to end up abroad in the near future.

It still looks nice though! I'll have to handle it in person to determine if the size jump is something I can handle (I had a Galaxy Nexus prior to my current iPhone 5s).

On the other hand, that Nexus 9 looks stunning.:)

Looks great and I want it. Especially since it's being made by motorola. Only bad thing is I'm not much of a fan of phones that have bigger than 5.2 inch screens. I'll probably just end up getting the Moto X 2014.

Wait, so this is coming off as a normal phone at carriers?

Which finally means the nexus may not lack in poor camera and bad battery life? holy hell if this thing has everything and then some i wouldnt mind paying 650 for it at all. I am ready to buy the note 4 out right on friday but damnit this right here is going to make me wait until release.

I been dying to get rid of my 5s and get back on android but i keep getting stalled!!!!!!!!!

There really is zero excuse for having a crap ass camera and lame battery life now.

This is a big boy phone at $650. All quality components from top to bottom is expected.

Premium price for premium build quality and specs.

I think Google is no longer interested competing in the midrange market/unlock territory. Google now offers the Android One for the prepaid countries. This Nexus 6 is for the subsidized postpaid plan buyers out there. Nexus line is losing one of its most appealing attraction - price. Galaxy Nexus was actually the first to offer a $349 price after six months of release. Then Nexus 4 and 5 right after.

OnePlus One is still the best bargain of the year followed by the Mi 4. But those are also near impossible to get too. 100K of those in stock can easily be gone faster than I type this post.

I think the price on the Nexus 6 (and Nexus 9) is quite justifiable except we have been spoiled with the prices of Nexus devices during the previous two years.

Theories...

- Google probably wanted to make some money as they missed the profit margins in their most recent quarter.

- Motorola and HTC aren't exactly in good financial terms and probably both don't want Google to undercut them esp the former since the Moto X is like $500+ and Moto E's and G's which are affordable enough.

- Each 2014 Nexus lack as much compromise as the previous Nexus devices like the 4, 5, and both 7's. Motorola and HTC are simply better hardware makers than Samsung (Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 10) and LG (Nexus 4 & 5) when it comes down to build quality. Asus is as good as HTC but their brand is still an underdog in the mobile industry.

- Android One program

It is still a business. I remember when I was on Cydia and many developers started charging for apps. They weren't working to give it away for free or for cheap. They still needed to make a profit. Google is not just going to work hard and give everything to us without a profit. Nexus 6 is basically 2014 Moto X phablet (GPE) priced similar to the other GPE's in the Play Store.

At this point, a OnePlus One is a better deal than the Motorola Nexus 6 and the $250 Xiaomi Mi Pad with the Tegra K1 SoC is a better deal than the $400 HTC Nexus 9. This isn't 2012 anymore when we can get an Asus Nexus 7 for $200 and an LG Nexus 4 for $300. Motorola and HTC worked hard without many compromises and both them and Google want to make a profit.
