A respected leaker is saying we will get BOTH a 10.2" iPad 7 non-Pro and an all new 10.5" iPad non-Pro, but at different times.

CoinX has an accurate track record, having previously tweeted the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR names of the 2018 iPhones before anyone else, in addition to the 2018 iPad Pro being 5.9mm thick and a few minor details about other Apple products. It is unclear where the information is sourced from.

See ya in twelve days...
I'm not feeling this rumor. Often these rumors of similar sizes get mixed up between the Pro and non-Pro models.

I think the rumor of the new 10.5 non-Pro is really about the new 10.5 Pro that will have the same design/style as the 2018 Pros that will replace the current 10.5 Pro and 2018 11" Pro. I suspect that this will be announced in Oct for the same price as the current 10.5 Pro.

If there is a 10.2 non-Pro iPad this year, I think it'll most likely be using the same chassis as the Air 1/2017/2018 but with slightly smaller bezels.

I too wondered the same thing. However, there is already an 11” Pro. No need for a 10.5” Pro. It’s quite possible they’ll take the 10.5” chassis, change the innards a bit, reduce the price slightly, and then rebrand it as an upmarket 10.5” non-Pro.

They’ve been keeping the 10.5” Pro around even after the 11” release, because it’s a cost issue. Presumably they’ll continue to keep old 10.5” Pro around as a mid-priced alternative until it can be replaced with something else at a slightly lower pricepoint.

As it stands now, I am not interested in the 10.5” Pro. But if they updated it and reduced the price a bit, I’d consider it. As for the 11” Pro, I’m not interested in it regardless of what specs are in it, since it costs too much to be justified for my light usage requirements.

The 9.7 Pro was quickly replaced by the 10.5 Pro and the 10.5 Pro was replaced by the 11 Pro (even though the 10.5 is still being sold). Apple is testing the consumer waters for what the best size is... they're not going to further fragment the line.

The line is already fragmented. Replacing the 10.5" Pro with a 10.5" non-Pro doesn't change that fragmentation.

Note, I'm not saying this will actually happen. I'm just saying that it's a reasonable possibility that it could happen.

I see the new 10.5 as more of a XR compliment - too expensive to be midrange, but not enough features to be Pro; like an all-rounded product that works for the majority.

I can see the lineup like this:

budget:
iPad mini around £249; A11 2GB RAM, 32/128 GB
iPad (10.2) around £349; A11/X 2/3GB RAM, 32/128 GB

'midrange' / back to original iPad (i.e 1, 2, 3, 4, Air etc.):
iPad (10.5) with the features I said earlier - new design + Liquid Retina without ProMotion and/or lamination, A12 with 3GB RAM, Apple Pencil 2 support + USB-C but no Smart Connector; for around the £619 price point replacing the current 10.5" Pro. 64/128/256 GB

pro:
iPad Pro 11 £769
iPad Pro 12.9 £969

The 10.5" has to drop in price for me to consider it. It's too closely priced to the 11" Pro and too expensive. This is especially true if it only has 3 GB and a cheaper screen. If they're going to bring it downmarket by removing ProMotion and lamination, and downgrading the RAM to 3 GB, then it needs to be closer priced to the budget models as well.

I just hope they add more ram and a better processor; there was a time where my needs would have made an ipad pro easier to justify; but my needs have changed; I just need a PDF reader (for case law), a netflix, marvel unlimited, kindle & social media machine, for which my current iPad 2 is getting pretty slow at.

im kind of where you are at. I use my iPad a lot, but the PRO line is overkill for me, but at the same time I want more RAM and some additional processing power. My air2 is running great, but I would like the promotion and more ram. Also it's battery is starting to show some age.

I’d love an updated 10.5”. I had a second generation Pro but sold it in anticipation of the third generation, but the price point was too much for me. I picked up a 6th generation to fill in the gap.

I’d be interested in an updated 10.5” starting around $500, with four speakers, laminated screen, and Pro motion. I‘m indifferent to USB-C vs Lightning and Apple Pencil 2 support. It would be nice but I assume there would be an added cost to be able to add charging capability to it.

Hmmm... The Apple Store has been down quite a long time now. I checked a couple of hours ago and it was down (and apparently had been down for hours before that). I thought I’d leave it a while to see what happens but as of 8 am Eastern time it’s still down.

Looks like they went ahead with de-featuring the 10.5" Pro to make it a cheaper iPad.

Two speakers and a lower resolution main camera for $499. Apple is generous with the A12 processor which makes me think they put in 3GB of RAM.

I really wish they would make a budget 12.9" iPad. I love the size of my aging first gen 12.9, but can't justify the $1200 price on the new one. I don't need all the Pro features. All I do is watch Youtube and browse the internet. I may consider the new Air instead.

As of today, we have a bunch more iPad11 Geekbench tests. We had iPad11,2 and iPad11,4 before, both with 3 GB RAM, and we have iPad11,1 and iPad11,3 today, also both with 3 GB RAM. And we also have confirmation from real consumers that the new iPad mini has 3 GB RAM. So, a definite confirmed.

BTW, for those who don't know, I went ahead and bought the iPad Pro 10.5" refurb instead, with 4 GB RAM. And now I'm spoiled by ProMotion. Maybe this is their (sort of) loss leader. Get us to buy the iPad Pro 10.5" for the price of an iPad Air (or less in my case), get us hooked on ProMotion, and then have us buy the new Face ID 11" the next time around.

Agreed. Next iPad will have to have ProMotion. That said, I’m, like you, happily looking forward to 2-4 years with the iPad Pro 10.5. Really fun reading this thread for the first time from today’s perspective. You were spot on with the ram prediction as well as many other things.
