Alright guys—I pre-ordered the WiFi+3g a while back, and now I'm waiting while everyone is playing with shinny new toys!

However painful it might be, I see this as a prime opportunity to prepare for the device. It's nice to understand something before I get my hands on it.

Here's the question for everyone who is waiting: what are you guys doing to get ready for the iPad?

Right now I've been organizing my PDFs with Papers for the Mac so I can use Papers Touch. I'm not sure what else to do though.

Hi there, this is my 1st post but i have been lurking round these forums for quite some time

As for my answer to the question

I do a lot of time off shore on vessels and used to carry a hackintoshed dell mini but im going to make the move to the ipad as soon as it lands on uk shores and use it for music, pics, video's, the general really,

Cant wait to have a play with 1

Thanks

James

I'm in the same boat waiting only for the Wifi I bought to reach Australian shores.

I've started converting some of my movies/tv shows into a format compatible with iPad, aswell as making some playlists to load on once I get it.

Most importantly though I've downloaded a fair amount of apps. Both ones that I know I will want, such as IM+, Twitterific, eBay etc, aswell as some others to test out the device such as some games.

Overall when it gets here I'll be set to load everything I initially want on it :)

For those in the US how does the data plan work

Does the ipad come with a preinstalled sim in it , or will there be a AT&T booth at the apple store to get you set up

Or

Do you take your ipad then venture into a AT&T store ???????

The 3G hasn't even landed in the US yet.

I'm prepping for mine by making sure all my iTunes and iPhoto libraries are up to date etc. I'm also sorting out my Things lists (iPad version coming) and getting a lot of info into Bento (as there's an iPad version of that coming).

I'm also getting everything out of Google and properly into Mobile Me (I've had MM for a couple of years but not committed to it properly until now - I expect more iPad stuff will come to MM at some point).

I've already made photo albums for the ipad. I have 3 albums (about 200 photos) I keep on iPod Touch, but the iPad will so much better for sharing photos in person, will become a portable work portfolio for me. So, now I have more than 15 albums (over 3,000 photos) ready to be transferred to my iPad.

I've researched and downloaded (some free, some paid) 44 iPad specific apps and 12 Ipad/iPhone universal apps. This is in addition to the 56 iPhone apps I already have. I've also, just this morning, organized which apps will be grouped on which pages, so they'll be easier to locate.

I Chose my 6 apps for the dock. Other pages will themed:
Most commonly used (8)
Media/Communication (7)
Functionality (16)
Reading/Study (11)
Novelty (8)
News (11)
Reference (12)
Action Games (17)
Table Games (9)

I'm really not this anal, I'm just excited and it was fun to think about prepare for it.

I believe that it will come with a micro (mini?) sim card for AT&T already installed and then you just activate it from the device itself. There will be no assistance needed, whether from the Apple store or an AT&T store.

Right so there wont be any slot to change cards about ?

Am i correct in guessing it is one pre installed sim that works over different companies but you gotta just choose what one is for you.

If you read the manual on the iPad available at Apple it says you sign up for the 3g directly from the iPad you don't even need iTunes, so I would assume that the sim card is preinstalled.

Major props to the OP....

I was coming on here to ask what the best app is for reading PDF files on the iPad and this Papers looks great!

My question is this...what do you guys use to 'store' the files on your iPad? Even though I have a 32GB iPhone I've never used it for carrying files around other than what I keep on my iDisk with MobileMe. Is there a good app for loading and storing files?

Thanks!

From what I can gather, the sim card you will need to organise yourself. It is the data plan that you can sign up to on the iPad. I think...

The 3G will actually come with a tool to remove the micro-sim. If you want to use another company, say in a foreign country, you would replace the micro-sim with the micro-sim you would get abroad.

GoodReader seems to be the most popular app for both reading PDFs and storing and organizing them. It accommodates large file sizes well. Check it out.

Yeah! It looks amazing. (; I can't wait to try it. I'll probably buy it soon (tonight) and try it on the iPhone.

If by accomodate you mean that the files show up and you can read them—sure. The problem is that GoodReader's rendering is choppy, the interface isn't very good (more on that soon), and the organizational tools amount to a pile of PDFs in folders—what about PDF metadata?

Right so the US comes pre installed with a AT&T sim because that was the first cell provider with apple .

So for the UK do you think it would come with a 02 pre installed sim

so far apple hasn't announced anything about data plans in countries other than the U.S.
so I think as it stands now you'll be responsible for buying an O2 card and setting up a plan

I can't wait to see the Jailbreak + Unlock for WiFi+3G. Very fun. To this end, I'd like to see ATT users in the states try this helpful mod on the iPad.

The 3G isn't locked...

I would like to convert some DVDs so that I can put them on my 3G when I get it.

I tried Handbrake on two separate computers and it's too darned slow--like snail pace slow.

Are there any other programs available--FREE if possible.

Thanks.

OK I have my 3G iPad on order. I use MobileMe and have all of my calendar, Contacts etc synced to my iPhone and Macs. To prevent duplicating info on the iPad when I first get it, do I sync with itunes and then turn on MobileMe? Will it see that it has been synced and not duplicate anything. What is the best way to do this?

3g

...just placed an order for a 32GB 3G w/ case today...consolidating fam pics on Iphoto to put on the IPAD...the waiting is the hardest part!!!:)

Since you're using MobileMe you can just choose not to sync the iPad for contacts/calender/etc. via iTunes and just have MobileMe do it. I have five devices syncing on MobileMe and I've never had a duplicate.

Thank you Avaloncourt, that is what I needed. Now will the new iPad try to sync when I plug it in? Is there a way to preset it with mobileme before I plug it in so there won't be any problems?
