Another consideration apart from "what do you shoot", is "what's your budget?"
My first upgrade from the (crop) standard/kit 17-85 lens was for a decent telephoto, choices included 70-200/2.8, 70-200/4, 200/2.8 & 135/2.
I eventually settled on the 135 (200+ equivalent on Canon crop body). I have had absolutely no regrets, and having f/2 at that focal length is amazing. Price was probably the biggest factor, as this was less than half of the 70-200/2.8 at the time.
I would also suggest renting a couple of lenses to try out which suits you best. I tried (rented) the 24-105/4L from Canon, thinking the focal range would be perfect, but there was something I didn't quite like (don't know if it was the weight, size or balance). I eventually bought the 24-70/4 (not the big/expensive 2.8) and am perfectly happy with that, although it is my least used lens.
The best advice I can offer, is don't necessarily insist on a prime, choose a lens that is special but outside your existing coverage: as a first addition (macro, wide or tele) getting a different perspective will probably improve your (enjoyment of) photography more than a duplication?
Check the B&H website, list all Nikon (brand) lenses, sorted by price high to low, and start dreaming of the potential... When you find something you like, check the reviews, see if there is a third-party equivalent and make your short-list.
Good luck and have fun.
