I'm not an expert on this, but I've had a couple photos printed onto canvas at my local costco (the nearest photo lab to where I live, no kidding) with very good results. The photos were both 10mp landscapes and came out quite well, although I have no idea what kind of printer/software the costco lab technicians used.

I did some work for a conference display and that was printed at 72 dpi and looked fine. It all depends on how close you want to be when you view it. Printing onto a rough surface like canvas probably doesn't need the full 300 dpi anyway, as others have said. Does the place where you'll get it done have any samples?
