Doesn't work for me on MacOS, but it does on iOS 15. I check my external IP address in safari and it never changes. I check on my phone, and its some random IP not located near me. Anyone actually verify this working in Mac OS?

it is not working for me either on my mac. It works on the iPad

I have private relay turned off, my VPN disconnected, and custom DNS set to NextDNS ( also tried AdGuard, Cloudlfare, etc. ) and iOS doesn’t seem to acknowledge that the setting is enabled. I can check my DNS and it’s using the DNS from my home router. If I turn off the Wi-Fi it’s using my cell service provider. Unfortunately this seems to hold true for my other device on iOS 14.6 (except the private relay part).

I hate to sound daft, but where are the settings located. I have both iOS 15 and Safari 15 on Monterey.

Updated everything, and private relay bypasses your local DNS. Which means that DNS based add blockers no longer work.
That affects more than adblockers. Many people run a local DNS server to make it easier to access the servers that they run on their home LAN.

I run all kinds of servers on my home LAN, and use DNS + reverse proxy to access my severs by name.

I run pihole and Unbound DNS servers. Luckily, I don’t use Safari so any DNS trickery it does doesn’t affect me.

Can this not be disabled in the settings for a network? If not it will be a problem for many as it would kill local DNS resolution. I’d be cool using this on untrusted networks, but wouldn’t need it home.

Does this work like a VPN service like Nord or Surfshark ? What Private Relay really does? thx.
Unfortunately NordVPN doesn’t work in Monterey, iOS 15, or iPadOS 15. It’s my VPN provider. If you try to connect it basically blocks the whole pipeline. No browsing no services.

But it’s still early. That doesn’t mean that Nord or other VPNs not working today, won’t work at launch time.

Safari only.

I bet it becomes system wide after 1 - 2 years because social media CEOs and VCs are genuinely truly immorally sick people. If you get something for free you are the product and worse than that they want to destroy our government and democracies so that those private rich people who own the most data control the most people.

Does anyone else have problems deactivating Private Relay? It stays off for a few minutes, then turns back on automatically.

SurfShark VPN works with their own app.

It works fine with IKE protocol.

Mine was the same, but this morning Nord VPN did work on my Mac/Monterey - still no go on iOS/iPadOS.

FYI - I had heard that Private Relay slows down Safari a bit. So, I just did SpeedTest on iPhone, iPad and MacBookPro - The iPad was normal at 337/6.94, the iPhone normal at 429/14.0, but the Mac showed 156/10.5, repeated at 33.8/11.3 - not good. So, I went into Sytem Preferences/AppleID and clicked Private Relay off. Now SpeedTest is 408.8/14.9. So, it appears that Private Relay on Monterey slows WiFi way down.

Safari only.

Not in the latest beta, seems to do strange things with the system dns. i.e. if I try to ping my raspberry pi (which does local dns for me) via it's name of "pi" I get a strange IP. This stops me doing "ssh pi" to access the raspberry pi. Turning off private relay and it works again. Even more bizarre "host pi" gives me the correct ip.

I will continue to use my Pihole on my home network, using Unbound as my DNS resolver, and use Private Relay outside the home. Seems to be the best of both worlds.

Does it come on automatically, ie have trusted/excluded networks?
