Hello!!

I have a mac pro 5.1 (mid 2010) with Sierra 10.12.6. I've tried to change the graphic card to AMD Radeon RX 570. First it seems like it works immediately (oob) after installing the physical hardware. It boots with no problem, I can watch movies, browse the internet, starting up all programs etc..

The first problem is that in the About This Mac it says I have a AMD R9 xxx 4096 MB instead of the RX 570.

The second problems is that I can´t start a game (Dying Light) that should work just fine with this card. The game starts but when it's time to play the picture becomes all black or freeze after a few seconds.

A third problem is that when I´m starting up a project in After Effects or Premiere it doesn´t go any faster than it did with my old card, which is an ATI Radeon 5770.

Hopefully you might know how the problems can be fixed :)

Thanks!!

Unable to show the correct name is normal in MacOS, unless you are running a flashed card (which is not available for 570), or the Sapphire PLUSE RX580 8GB card (Part#s: 113-4E3531U or 113-4E353BU).

Also, the PCI section in system report (or system info) shows error is also normal (fixed it 10.13 beta).

Sounds like the driver is not ready for gaming. But I don't have this card and game, can't test it. Anyway, playing in Windows will be a much better choice.

Your work flow in AE / Premiere didn't speed up may be due to the bottleneck is not on the GPU. 6GB RAM for 10.12.6 is very very marginal. In my own test, just boot to desktop with only one profile log in, the system will use around 8GB RAM. During video work, the RAM usage (NOT including work as cache) usually at around 24GB level. For just 6GB, I can imagine that the system need lots of SWAP, which can be a huge bottleneck.

Awesome. Did not know that they had fixed that in High Sierra.

You might also want to upgrade your CPUs. While probably not a bottleneck, as h98 pointed out your RAM most likely is, its a nice upgrade for relatively little cost. See here for details:
Mac Pro CPU Compatibility List

2x X5680 or X5690 CPUs would be a nice upgrade.

Interesting! Is it possible (with no known issues) for my system to change the CPU to two X5690 3,46ghz six core?

Very, very easy. Many of us have done so! Check a lot of the signatures around here ;)

Ok! I see you almost have the same mac as I. How much better did it become when you changed CPU?

Upgrade from E5620 to X5690 will give you...

~40% faster on single thread application (which means most daily ops)

~113% faster on multi thread application (e.g. video rendering / encoding)

IF you are CPU limiting <--- very important!

Cool! Thanks for helping out!!

If you do end up upgrading your CPU and want to do the RAM also make sure you buy 2rank, DDR3, 1333MHz, ECC memory.

My rx 560 is behaving much worse now that it's supported natively in 10.12.6, than in 10.12.5 with a patched kext. That means some graphical glitches with window server(mostly safari+html5 full screen issues) and unpredictable behaviour when acceleration is needed - in games and pro apps. Let's just hope they're still tinkering with the driver and it'll be all fine and dandy in High Sierra.

Good to know. If I upgrade the ram before the CPU, can I go with the 2rank, DDR3, 1333MHz, ECC memory anyway?

Ok, there's so many saying server memory wont work. But I don't understand why. Wonder if dual rank is the same as 2rank, like these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/6x-16GB-96G...865011&hash=item53eb428c74:g:bNoAAOSwpdpVZN19

Do you know anything about if there can be bad brands on the CPU (X5690) Squuiid recommended? I saw a matched pair from Hong Kong, but it had a different look than other X5690's: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Matched-Pai...145931&hash=item1ebe4a69b2:g:M-8AAOSwa~BYW5RJ

I believe 2Rank mean dual Rank. On the DIMM's sticker, it usually expresss as 2Rx4, so nothing wrong to call it 2Rank.

There is only one version (stepping) of X5690, as long as it's not an engineering sample. It should work properly in cMP.

[doublepost=1504428413][/doublepost]Does it have to be 2rank versions of the memory? Whats the difference between these and ordinary?

No, dual rank is not a requiremeny, but just give you less trouble.

e.g. Quad rank DIMM may run at lower speed.

It says that it's for servers cards. Some people keep saying that I shouldn´t buy server memory (I'm not gonna use it for a server, more for video editing). Why?

Server memory simply can't boot on normal computer. If those "other people" is not a Mac Pro owner, they may have no idea Mac Pro indeed use server memory.

Ha ha :) so it's the PC-people out there trying to make me scared!
