We are using Paypal because Apple has offered it - and if they offer it it has to work. Simple.

Don't forget that CCs aren't in every country a common option to pay with, limits here are often lower than "you" have and you have to give them good arguments to get a higher limit.

Also some may have a balance at paypal... why not use it?

I didn't realize that getting a CC company to commit to a few thousand Euros was such a big deal. I can buy at least two fully loaded nMPs (each with a couple of high end 4K displays) on credit, and I'm not rich by US standards.

Well they made a big deal about it.
Problem is there's a fundamental difference here and over the sea in how people use their credit cards. I guess that's why apple came up with paypal in the first place. Cause not many people even own a credit card here.

I spoke to paypal again, they told me that this is definitely apple messing things up because:

There are many scenarios in which an order takes more than 30 days to be completed which is no problem at all for paypal to process or hold open for more than 30 days, even for many months.

But the retailer has to set the amount of days they want an order to be pending manually. Apple in this case set it to 30 days, even though they knew they wouldn't ship the damn thing during that time frame.

Apple support today promised me that a supervisor would call me during the day.
Let's see what will happen ^^

At least I have to say that paypal's service reps are much more on top of their game than the ones at apple. They know what's going on and acknowledge a problem when there is one. Oh, and they speak proper German, as opposed to many apple employees who seem to be sitting in some callcenter in eastern europe.

So.

I finally spoke to a supervisor. That was the first guy who took the issue seriously and already promised me a refund for being so helpful and informing apple about this problem they have with paypal.

He gave me his contacts and wrote the finance dept right away so that they can approach me and help to find a solution.

He even asked for a screenshot of my paypal account where one can see the issue. He was the first guy to even acknowledge that there EXISTS a problem.

So... let's see how it goes.. but he assured me that they will find a solution. :apple:

Reported PayPal to Federal Trade Commission

I finally had to complain to the Federal Trade Commission because they failed to delete my PayPal account, and to honor my repeated request to not receive email (junk mail) from them.

Apple = Good
PayPal = Bad

If Apple wants to maintain a good rep as a company who values their customer's privacy, they will stay a zillion miles away from PayPal.

I feel sorry for your problem, but it seems that in this particular case it's more like

PayPal=neutral
Apple=bad!

It's hard to see how Apple is bad for following common business practices. As a consumer it is your job to not be ignorant of common business practices.

I was in a similar situation. I'm surprised nobody had this as advice, either.
This is what you do to keep your place in line for the nMP while charging the full amount right away:

What you do is - keep your mac pro order. Don't touch it.

Place an order for giftcards totalling what you're putting on your paypal.
Call Apple to change your form of payment on your nMP to the gift cards.

VIOLA! You kept your place in line and money's been taken from your account! Now just play the waiting game!

Problem is that apple specified at paypal that they want the order just to last 30 days. While retailers have the option to specify any amount of time they wish an order to stay open. But they just chose a period of time that was too short.

Me as a customer may very we'll expect apple, a company that's all about a smooth user experience and perfection in every way, to avoid bumps like this.

I don't understand. iTunes gift cards?

GREAT! Today I finally received an email by apple, stating that there occured a problem with the authorization of my money and they may cancel my order.

I tried to speak to someone at apple again today but no one helpful was available.

I find this whole thing incredible. It's a farce that one of the biggest computer company in the world is unable to influence their financing system to change the payment method to something different. :mad:

Update: today my order from jan 3rd got canceled and I had to open up a new one and pay via credit card. Great, why didn't they tell me that I had to do this 2 weeks ago?
The lady I talked to today was from "Apple Online Store Executive Relations" and really nice. She understood the problem completely and called me at least 5 times today until we had found a solution.
She PROMISED me a 200€ refund and priorization so I should still get my machine in February. She said one of the next that rolls out of the factory.

I'm really curious if that will proof to be true!
