I, personally, have no problem with the case. Its limitations are obvious. I use a cheap aftermarket case in conjunction with the Apple case for travel. Around the house I appreciate the lack of bulk.

Yeah, except that’s not how cases are supposed to work. Here is the one for my Sony’s WH-1000XM4. I know whenever they’re in there they’re completely safe….EVEN if I’m a klutz

"Yes I'm a bad driver, but I ran over my AirPods Max in a case like this and they were crushed. I thought since it was in a case, they would be protected, but oh look, they weren't. Why would anyone create a case so utterly useless?"

With all due respect, your scenario (or extremely poor attempt at mockery) doesn’t make sense. Dropping your headphones is a common scenario, putting them in a bag fully & tightly packed with other stuff is a common scenario. I’m both of those the Sony case would be very useful, while the Apple one would not. If you left them on the street and someone ran, then tough luck…..

I can't remember ever dropping my headphones, or any of my cameras either. My iPhone fell out of my shirt pocket into the toilet once which was a near catastrophe, but I blamed that on me not being careful enough. I didn't blame it on the iPhone case.

I have a canvas tote bag that holds all of my portable audio stuff... It has my cans, my bluetooth speakers, battery packs, AirPods Pro, cables, chargers, memory cards full of music, Car Alexa, etc. I've got everything in there in canvas bags to keep it all organized. No big bulky cases. I take care of the bag. I don't throw it on the ground or swing it into chair legs or anything like that. It seems to protect everything just fine.

I bought a round case like the photo at Amazon. It was cheap. I haven't used it yet though. I usually just put on the bra and put the APMs in the canvas bag. It's funny. I see all the reviews complaining about the bra, but I thought back and whenever I buy something like an Oculus or a camera or something like that, I go out and buy one of those semi hard shell cases with the zipper, but I never end up using them. They just take up too much space like that, and I don't like having to unzip to extricate them from the case every time. But I'm using the bra. Go figure. Maybe there is a concept behind the simpler case.

Case provides ventilation, closed would cause funk. Different use cases are tailor made in the aftermarket or with apple care +. No one forced anyone to purchase it.
