Just because PRO is in the name, doesn't necessarily mean that it will truly be a PRO driven workstation... look at the MacBook PRO line - newest models aren't barely user upgradeable. Depending on what the design/redesign of a new "Mac Pro" model is, having user serviceable parts may not be the case. And I'd agree that it wouldn't really be a PRO machine if that is the case, but it still could be called that in terms of naming and marketing.

I'm in the same category as most and hope that this is not the case, but I'm not closing my eyes to the fact that it possibly could happen. If it does, I will adjust accordingly. I don't need a "big Mac Mini" machine - I need a new Mac Pro.

Apple would probably do themselves a favor to just get rid of the "Pro" moniker altogether. At this point the term has been so bastardized and Balkanized that it really isn't all that useful anymore.

I think the original intent was "professional -- derives part of income from using the Mac ( generally implying less price sensitive than the non "Pro" products since it produces income )". That notion (which actually matches the definition of the word) has completely gone down the toilet over last 3-4 years.

Apple could move the whole laptop line up to just "Macbook" without any suffixes that aren't screen dimensions. They can't collapse the desktop line up to just one name, but dropping "Pro" there too would be a good move. At least the complainers would have to come up with something that was actually precise.

If they are sticking with Xeon CPU packages could just call it Mac X. (whether that is Xeon, eXpandable, eXpensive , OS X , etc. would be left to the imagination.)

That would also give the "doom and gloom" folks something to groan on about that the name died ( nevermind that the core functionality actually continued forward. )

Same thing with the software. Just drop it as it is a just a vestigial modifier. There is no reason to split subsets of product into two different pricing categories. ( that is all "Pro" and "Express" primarily did. )

If the price matches the package I'll get one. The machine is so far behind the curve that mentioning upgrades seems superfluous due to the amount of threads/articles mentioning what they are lacking.

I would say that the Retina's are barely user upgradeable while the normal line of MacBook Pros aren't barely user upgradeable.

one that I can afford

Getting me into a Mac Pro is simple. One that I can afford is as good as sold.

Do your jobs not give you much of a hardware budget?

I have a chicken-and-the-egg type thing where my jobs that require more hardware power tend to pay more, allowing me to afford more hardware power.

My hardware budget is not an issue. I was simply making the point that it will take next to zero effort to get me into a new Mac Pro. I probably didn't choose my words correctly.

Well, 2.5 months later we sure do know a lot more. Got my HP z820 last night, filled up all the slots, added 2 internal SSD RAIDs and am finishing up loading software now. It's about the same size as a current Mac Pro and, while not cylindrical, seem pretty darn fast.

Stoked about getting to work now! Off to render. I'll still be keeping my eye out around here.

Amen brother

Even if I'm still using this 2009 Mac Pro in 2019... I won't be going back to anything shipped by Microsoft... ever! Cue the song by Taylor Swift "We are never ever getting back together" :)
I really needed something with more chops than my 24" iMac. I purchased a used mac pro instead of something brand new that ran the Microsoft OS. I must say that my new(to me anyway) machine is performing beyond expectations.

For sure, there's a bunch of ways to skin this cat. I'm not really interested in a Hackintosh but a 5,1 with top-end processors would be a lot of fun!

This is news to me. Who got burned by Blackmagic?

They took pre-orders on Cinema Cameras that were supposed to be a few months out in 2012. It ended up being almost a year for myself and many, and when they finally came flooding in they announced a new, better, similarly priced model as the old ones were on delivery trucks all over the world. It was pretty ugly.

I love me some Blackmagic but that was cold-blooded.

You could cancel your order anytime. Technology is always improving. That's not really screwing the customer.
