I think there’s a decent chance of an update / refresh, but it won’t be anything significant.

I mean zero chance they’ll get Face ID or the new iPad Pro treatment - the current iPad after the move from the Air 2 didn’t even keep a laminated display.

Well, according to Ming Chi Kuo the update to the iPad mini is coming soon. He said possibly by the end of the year, but most likely in early March of 2019. So I am assuming March is a good bet. And if so, it will probably be updated alongside the new regular 9.7” iPad.

My question is, will the new iPad mini finally get Apple Pencil support? And speaking of the Apple Pencil, will Apple continue to produce TWO Apple pencils? And for how long? It seems kinda odd to have two different pencils. Especially since the first pencils charging method is considered awkward and very un-Apple like. I don’t see them keeping it around to confuse people while the second version is so much better. Kinda tarnishes the Apple brand I think.

So, if Apple will discontinue the first gen Apple Pencil, would that mean the regular 9.7” iPad (and perhaps iPad mini) get a redesign like the new iPad Pros with the flat edges so they can charge the new Apple Pencil? Seems like they’d have to. And would that redesign happen this March? Or would Apple wait until the 10th anniversary of the iPad in 2020? Hmm.

But whenever this happens, what will Apple do with the sizes? Will they keep the regular 9.7” screen the same size but just shrink the bezels like they did on the 12.9”? And will they increase the screen size of the iPad mini from 7.9” to 8.5” like they did with the 11” iPad Pro? Another interesting thing to ponder.

I bought the 11" IPP and I'm really happy with it, but I still love my Mini. If Apple would update it I would buy a new one for sure. Its just a nice size for reading in bed and to carry around.
Exactly my thoughts! I read a LOT of books, and my aging Mini is my device of choice for that. For everything else, I use my new iPP, 11”. I will be devastated if the Mini is discontinued as per the many rumors I have seen.

I fully expect that Apple will update both the iPad (regular) and the mini to work with the new Apple Pencil (because hey, why not make more money from the pencils). They will probably also get the USB-C connector and I bet next year’s phones will have that connector as well.

The latest rumor is that they’re working on a new mini. I’m inclined to believe that’s true.

I hope no laminated screen on any potential 7th generation. Never liked them with too many quirks and anomalies. My 5th gen Retina display is perfect to me and hope they just improve or increase resolution of the Retina technology.

What do you mean? What quirks? All newer iPhones in last few years are laminated, the air 2 is laminated as well. I dont care about the fancy 120hz stuff but I think a more basic laminated display would be nice

Don’t get me wrong, I love my 6th gen display as well and don’t notice the lack of laminated display but always welcome a more improved screen lol

At least on this forum, people often report spots, yellow bands, uneven backlight, etc. So many have returned them to exchange over these issues. Rarely did I ever see such complaints over the regular Retina. I owned the 10.5 for a while and didn’t like the screen sensitivity when pressing the home button, something also reported many times. I also never saw the massive visual improvement of laminated, anyway. So as a personal preference, regular Retina for me. Laminated was always over-hyped and over-priced to me.

This is my logic for them updating to use the pencil - I don’t think they’ll want to keep making two pencils. Same for the connectors - now that they’ve introduced USB-C to the iPad Pro, it makes sense to include it on the rest of the line, especially if they’re redesigning for pencil charging.

You bring up some interesting questions on the sizing, and I wonder if they’ll keep both the mini and the regular, or if they’ll make one device that meets in the middle - something physically slightly larger than the current mini, but with a much larger screen and flat sides (for the pencil).

Fair enough, I knew about the issues in the 10.5 but i also attribute some of the issues to them cramming in too much tech into all the displays, maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention but I don’t recall many complaints on the air 2 display

Either way I am very happy with the display on my 6th gen, I’ll take the extra speakers ahead of display bump

I pretty much agree with you here.

I think that we will see a seventh generation iPad at some point during 2019. I see this model becoming more important to Apple because of the price of the Pro range.

The focus will still be on keeping costs down to make it attractive for the education market, so I wouldn’t expect to see significant improvements. For that reason, it’s likely that they will use a lot of existing parts.

I’m pretty sure Apple will stick with the same screen size. It keeps the costs down and differentiates it from the Pro models.

The big question is whether they move to a laminated display. The fifth and sixth generations used the Air chassis, moving to a laminated display would allow them to use the Air 2 or even the Pro 9.7 chassis. There are obvious cost savings in terms of research and development, and also tooling, in reusing an existing chassis.

The 3GB A11 would seem like the obvious choice for the processor.

If they used the Air 2 chassis then the selling points would be that it's thinner and lighter, faster, and has a better display.

Switching to the Pro 9.7 chassis would also allow them to offer better sound as it includes four speakers. I suspect that they would delete the smart connector, again, to save costs and differentiate it from the Pro line.

I like the idea of going to the Ipad Air 2 chassis though the tooling for it may be gone.

In the future I can Apple combining the mini and 9.7. Take the bezels out of a 9.7 and one gets close the mini external size.

It would be great to see the 2018 iPad Pro form-factor put onto the mini. smaller bezels, pencil support, USB-C would be great.

And either the wider screen (like 11") or the smaller foot-print would be fine with me. I'm hoping Mr. Ming Chi Kuo is right about early 2019.

My guess is iPad's gonna go Face ID and edge-to-edge as well, probably next March. It'll also support Apple Pencil 2nd gen and have Lightning port replaced by USB-C.

On the non-Pro model? I doubt it’ll see such substantial Pro-like changes in 2019.

Yeah, I am curious too. Does Apple do a radical update this March that allows the next 9.7” iPad use the new Apple Pencil? And perhaps the new iPad mini too? Or do they just do a modest update, and wait until March 2020 for the 10th anniversary of the regular iPad to radically change the design? That way Apple has time to sell out of stock of the 10.5” and first gen Pencil. I dunno. Just guessing here. We’ll find out in about 4 months. Personally, I would love a redesigned iPad mini with pencil #2 support. But that may be asking for too much. My old iPad mini 2 is literally dying in front of me. It hasn’t gotten much longer. I am still waiting on delivery of my iPad Pro 11”. I was tempted to get the 12.9” and an iPad mini when it’s updated...but felt the 11” was a good hedge should that not happen.

Well, whatever they do the regular iPad is excellent in my opinion, and under appreciated (here at least). A couple 5th gens here and expect them to be good for a few more years.

I would never pay the kind of prices Apple is demanding for the Pro. So as long as the regular iPad is offered, I remain an iPad fan.

I agree. The thing that could push me into replacing my iPad 5th gen with a newer iPad would be if there were significant iOS13 iPad specific improvements that only ran on the Pro and the latest iPad models.

Either way, the regular 2018 iPad is an incredible value. They were on sale for $250 during black Friday, and I suspect more sales will occur throughout the holidays.
