I use Tubex since McTube was pulled and no longer functions.

I'd download this if it were free, but google will inevitably make the developer halt or otherwise make the app stop working, and i'm not really one to just burn money.

Tubex plays video in the background, you can select your resolution as well and its free. Don't see much of a difference here...

What I love about this app is that I can choose what resolution videos stream in. I had a tonne of buffering issues with the Google app because it always started streaming in the highest possible resolution.

You can do that with the youtube app as well (klick on the video, then klick on the three dots in the upper right corner an then click on quality or whatever it is called in english).

Among the options I can choose is 1080 (if it exist for the clip), so I'm not sure what others mean they can't play 1080 ??

It can't stream 1080p videos, quality starts to decrease automatically.

Yeah but it's a permanent setting in ProTube not a per video setting

Looks like I spoke too soon. I just received an error message about me having performed too many requests and I am apparently unable to use for the app for the next 24 hours or so. I don't even think I was abusing the app in any way (just watching videos as I normally do on YouTube).

Ridiculous.

Is this the 50 video limit do you think? If so, why are there any restrictions in a paid for app?

Email developer. Interesting what he will reply. If there is any limits for viewing videos I will go for a refund because I don't need such app.

You can make it permanent from your youtube account WEB page (not as convenient as doing it directly from the app, but it is at least doable).

It can't stream 1080p videos, quality starts to decrease automatically.

I don't recall I have ever experienced a permanent decrease (a momentarily decrease yes, but not permanent). This is probably network dependent (I'm in Sweden), so I can imagine some may have issues with permanent quality decrease.

As far as I understand it the 50 sub limit is in relation to how many videos you will see in your latest subscribed playlist. It does not mean you are limited to a maximum of 50 subscriptions. Although if your videographers released new content on the same day that totalled more than 50 it could be an issue. To be honest I think all sections are limited to showing a certain number of videos, even the YT supplied app is the same.

It's actually covered in the FAQ.

I get an error message saying "Too many requests performed":

YouTube has strict limitations on the number of requests that a single app can send to the YouTube API. This means that if too many requests are sent within a period of time, access to YouTube data will be blocked for all users of ProTube for up to 24 hours. To avoid this, ProTube detects potential abuses of certain features or requests, like repeated refreshing or repeated liking/disliking of a video, etc. If ProTube detects such an abuse, it will block access to the YouTube API for up to 24 hours (Mostly just minutes). This is a good way of avoiding to reach the YouTube API limit which would render ProTube unusable for all users for up to 24 hours. Instead, the API access is only blocked for users sending too many requests; it solves the problem at its roots. Please note that during normal use of ProTube you should never encounter this error message.

The issue is, I don't think I was abusing it in any way. I certainly wasn't aggressively reloading or liking videos. Without any hard numbers, it feels like the app arbitrarily decides when to lock me out, or that I am being penalized for the actions of other people. As it is, I don't even know how many videos I can safely watch, or the sequence of actions which triggered this ban.

I think this limitation could have been better publicized on the app home page.

Which is a shame, because I do find the app much more capable. It would explain why YouTube doesn't feel threatened. They know there's a catch.

Here's what I am still seeing in the Protube app on my iPad (iPhone version is still working fine at the moment, mainly because I haven't really used it yet).

I don't regret my purchase, but don't be in a hurry to delete your original YouTube app. Just saying.

That's BS if you don't know when the ban is coming, or how long it will last.

Something came to mind. I was hunting for the 'subscribe' button and had tapped a checkbox on and off a few times (apparently, the app doesn't let me subscribe to channels) while trying to find out what the various buttons do. This might have triggered the algorithm. A warning message may have been nice.

Well, 24 hours it seems. I will keep everyone updated. It's been about 10-11 hours since, and I am still banned from using the app on my iPad.

Protube app is so much better then the Google Youtube app on iOS

Update - I just deleted and reinstalled the app on my iPad. Seems to be working fine again.
