It does NOT. Read the vegan boards about PU leather. They've even gone as far to post molecular compound schematics for DUI projects.

Well, technically, there is no guideline of what PU leather is. In furniture making, it's started out being promoted as containing leather and thus feels more like leather than plain PVC materials. You can look it up on Wikipedia among another places.

So your statement that PU leather doesn't contain leather is wrong, and so is mine about it containing leather. Some do, and some don't. Most vendor want to highlight the fact that theirs contain leather if it does, unless they target vegans.

What is crazy is that it is much harder to find real leather in many items. I.e. so many stores that used to carry actual leather items are now carrying the PU junk. Even some of the high end stores will carry half their inventory with PU. I have been shopping for a new purse and some of my usual brands, which have always been made with quality leather are now filtering in the junk. I really have to pay attention to see if it's real or not. Or some have a combination of leather and like PU trim.

We also have an outlet store nearby that always had nothing but leather shoes. Now you are lucky if you can find any in leather. And of course the prices haven't been reduced to PU pricing. Now I say that assuming that PU leather would be only a fraction of the cost of quality real leather.

What I have seen is that the price of real leather goods has gone up considerably. In my new purse search, I would say the pricing from a couple of years ago has doubled.

Need Help with Smell Problem

I purchased a computer chair from Walmart (made in China, where else?) and it has a strong annoying smell. I wrote the manufacturer to ask what it's made of and they replied: "Bonded leather as follows - PU Coating: 100% PU; DMI 20%; Color Power 17%.

Can anybody tell me what is DMI and Color Power?
Also, and most critically, any suggestions on how to get rid of the smell? (I placed the chair in the garage for 3 weeks now, with plenty fresh air, and the smell didn't go away. (I think those who claim it goes away after a week have simply got use to it and don't notice it anymore.)

Thanks.

Question 1)

Where is PU leather from?
Why do supcases not have a tag saying "made in ____"

Question 2)
I remember stories of shoes coming from places in the world where the entire town smells like imported shoes.
Does the entire town where supcase is made smell like this?

Buy something that is known to be genuine leather then - like a Kavaj or Jisoncase rather than something from an obscure Chinese backyard factory.

Your against buying something from a Chinese backyard factory for your tech which is from a backyard Chinese factory?

PU is PU, leather is leather. PU cases are plastic cases that's made to be look like leather.

Also, Apple's Smart Case for iPad Air / iPad mini and the Apple iPhone 5s case are made of genuine leather.

PU Leather is akin to hot dog packaging saying 'contains beef'. Yes, it does, but the parts of beef are intestines, toenails, tongue, etc. So yes, PU leather contains some leather, but it is as far away from real hide as a hot dog is from a free roaming, grass fed, filet Mignon steak.

PU leather -- so named for its notable smell -- was created to replace naugahyde, which was highly prized but it's overuse sadly resulted in the extinction of the naugabeast. :(

Pu leather is not questionable

When we talking about pu leather ,for my stand of the view(I am the sales manager of a pu leather factory),here is some issues I may want to discuss with you.
1st,Synthetic leather can be non-toxic.Nowadays our products have passed REACH standards,so it will not hurt people's health.
2nd,for enviromental protection.Leather is widely used in people's normal life,we pick leather shoes, leather bags, leather garments, leather sofa.If all the needs depend on the animals, you really think there are enough cows or sheeps for human to murder?
3nd,about the questionable smell,i have to admitted that is a problem. But we can use new solvent to replace the old one.
Anyway,I think your view is being go to extremes.Synthetic leather make a huge improve about our lifes. And if you really can't stand that you are not using a animal skin for bags,it's your choice.
[doublepost=1506728284][/doublepost]Well, in my mind.... I agree, leather is very durable and gets better with age if cared for. BUT HELLO! In this case... which is a FB advertisement , for cute ankle boots.... for over 100.00... well Over..... For a price like that. I wouldn't expect my new boots to be anything other than
Leather! IF the price was in comparison to the value of the boots.... then I would buy them.... bc I do love e em!
They don't "Breathe" I guess they have an order? Great! SHE gets here and all we smell is her FEET! lOL OMG how embarrassing but
no, I believe I'll wait till I can find a cute pair of leather boots or atick with my trusty UGGs!!! Thank you Austrailia and Neil Young!!!♥️✌

That's why I bought a Temple case made with none other than WWII vintage genuine dead cow.

;)

Ww2 is a trigger for most people it seems. Put a Nazi swastika vs. Soviet Sickle and hammer iPhone case and it triggered people so I had to stop using it. Some people hate nazis, some people hate commies. I am just a ww2 enthusiast who don’t care about politics. So I would be careful bringing up world war 2, the geek world is full of sensitive people.

I said hey,[p]u..,get offa my cloud

PU (cannot bring myself to say Leather in same sentence)
Let's get one thing straight, man, best be careful.."peoplekind" have used "Dead Cow" for millenia without the need for anything sin-pathetic (ha, didn't know why I joined but I can see now it's gonna be a cool ride!)
Warmth, clothing, handbags etc. even, yes, condoms. Can you imagine using a piece of Bi(By)cast instead? No flexibility, warmth, comfort et al.
Main point is as I'm coming to try & sell a 100% Genuine Leather jacket on eBay, ought there not be restrictions on how/where PU is listed!! As the myriad (yes, gonna complain to eBay) of PU jackets placed for sale by Copious amounts of Far eastern Factories simply swallow up & around, in this case, my Jacket.
I know people simply drag past All those chepo ads until the Real leather ones come into play & PU thin out. Therefore listing mine at an attractive price so as to sell will almost certainly never be seen/ then at the forced higher price, will be looked at but discounted due to it being 'too high a price.' Matter of taste when all's said n' done, But why don't you get Your Own little compartment clearly stating you're a PU sufferer & stop living off the backs of us in reflected glory.
I guess there is a True comparison to be made, way to tell apart..PU is the equivalent of that bygone (if you remember) "Tracing paper for toilet roll In comparison to what is without doubt, Cotton rich rolls!!"

AMEN to that!!!!

Polyurethanes are often used in a chemical formula as follows: urethane, solvent (MAK, MEK, Acetone etc.), colouring (could be a dye, a paint, or powder). The smells are usually consistent with solvent use, and usually have a 'sweet' aroma to them, but when the have amines they can smell like ammonia. If it's more of a foul smell, it's most likely the urethane product used. Sometimes catalysts are used to speed up reaction or drying (curing) time, and they can often smell foul as well (like ammonia).

DMI is a solvent, and I'm sure 'power' meant powdered colour, which in the case of black is carbon powder.

As for how to get rid of the smell, sometimes it goes on its own after it's completely dried and aired out, sometimes it never goes away.
