You almost certainly won't notice the difference in CPU between the middle and top spec models, but I think you'd notice the disk speed.

I just dropped $2600 on the iMac in my sig...best money I've ever spent, *after* having bought my first mac (Mac Pro early 2008, which lasted me over 6 years) for about $2500 back in the day.

You really do get what you pay for in terms of speed and performance. I'm *LOVING* this thing, still getting used to having a full retina 27" display. Really outstanding
