@zoltm yep as i mentioned
depends on the market, in the UK
so in the UK from a quick look it is as i outlined

the OP in his local shops the RX 590 is $100 over a RX 580

so relay it's up to each user to choose what is best at the time & pricing always changes over time

I did also mention at same price buy it ;)

did not think to mention grab it if cheaper to

I got my rx 580 used and at about £100 at the time im happy with that

Probably against my better judgment, I went for the Sapphire Pulse RX590 8GB. It was on sale - just NZ$40 more than the Pulse RX580 so couldn't pass it by.

I've had an absolute nightmare upgrading my other cMP Hexa-core to take the R9 380X. Something has caused some kind of PCI freaky stuff. My SATA III SSD boot drive (which I put into one of the direct connect bays) can't be seen now when back in PCI slot 3. Will try slot 4 and 2 etc. The R9 380X is glitching all over the place - big screens of red, and patchy/blotchy logon screen, intermittent crashes etc. I've done the SMC and NVRAM resets, and I've finally been able to upgrade to 144.0.0.0.0 from 89 (like stabbing blindly in the dark), and upgrade the OS to Mojave but had to do that on my main cMP.

Had one issue with the RX590 - my energy settings are: screensaver comes on after 20 mins and the screen goes to sleep after 3 hours. But I came back to a darkish grey screen after about 1 hour, and it was unresponsive - no mouse cursor, no input from anything. Pressed the power button and it turned immediately off. Hmmm. So I've disabled the screen from going to sleep - will see how that goes.

My suggestion, try 10.14.6 beta. It's very very stable. In fact, shows better stability for RX580. So, most likely better for RX590 as well.

With 10.14.5 official or earlier. I've seen monitor unable to wake from sleep (system still working, just monitor sleep). I know it's different than your case, but also monitor sleep / wake issue. So, may be applicable.

But with 10.14.6 beta, works perfectly so far (from beta 1 to beta 4).

Also, for monitor sleep wake to work properly. It's seem the "Allow Bluetooth device to wake this computer" in System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Advance have to turn OFF.

Hi,
I still run High Sierra on a 5,1 MP with a Macvidcards flashed GTX980 and I occasionally pop into Windows 10
to game. I was thinking of going to Mojave and wondering if the performance would drop when replacing the GTX980 with an RX580 in general and specifically in Windows gaming mainly BF1?

Roughly the same.

Hmm. I'm getting only basic GPU support (1280x1014) in Win10. Do I need to download an updated BootCamp drivers or use Brigadier again? I've tried Brigadier but I keep getting the same error
'brigadier' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Anyone know what I need to do to get this RX590 working under BootCamp in Win10?

Go to AMD web site, download and install the driver for RX590.

I've downloaded the AMD macOS driver for iMacPro1,1 from this page with no luck:
https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/apple-boot-camp

I also tried the iMac 2019 drivers and the Mac Pro 2013 driver packages as well. No go.

I've also tried downloading and installing the normal Win10 64-bit RX590 driver - stuck on the install screen looking for an update, it says. Going to try this link to see if this works after upgrading to Win10 1903 first. Damn Windoze!
https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/radeon-500-series/radeon-rx-500-series/radeon-rx-590

Thanks for that. I had to work out the long way that I had to use the actual installer that I used to install an earlier version of AMD Catalyst to actually uninstall it first before installing a newer version. I thought I could just upgrade over the top, like you can on a Mac for most software. Hours later, and eventually my RX590 is humming perfectly in Win10.

To be honest, I'm not sure how I should benchtest my RX590. I've got Heaven and Valley, GeekBench 3 & 4, and LuxMark. But I'm a little confused as to which apps I should use, and what settings I should fix because the results I'm getting haven't been as good as some RX580 results. If anyone knows the actual settings for these apps please share.

Has anyone tried an RX5700 or RX5700XT? Does Mojave or above like it?
The power spec seems fine at 180W and 225W TDP.

Apologies...I delved deeper and found a thread on the RX5700 which revealed its not really ready for arid conditions of the Mojave....yet!
Also seems as though 2010 MPs are potentially going to be excluded with Catalina!!!

Luxmark usually can benchmark quite well.

It's definitely GPU limiting, not CPU (single thread) demanding at all, no need to set anything, just launch and run. And the score usually quite stable.

In general, the following is good enough.

1) cold boot
2) open activity monitor and check no demanding background activity
3) if not a clean OS installation, close unnecessary apps as much as possible (e.g. all apps on the menu bar)
4) after double check activity monitor, the computer is pretty much idle
5) Open Luxmark, then do not touch it, just let it run

You may repeat step 5 a few times to confirm the score is stable. Then shut down, swap card, and repeat the above steps again.

Hi,
So are you feeding power to the single 8 pin on the rx590 from the 2 x 6pin on the m/board?

Yes. No problems so far with light gaming. Haven’t had time to do any Affinity apps, Motion or FCPX work yet. I’m not quite sure how I would gauge power usage - I see most users measuring it in Win. Is there Mac software that accurately measures GPU power consumption (I’ve got iStat Menus but this doesn’t provide reporting results), or do I use Ampman? in Win?

Hi Folks, I thought I would share my experience. I have the Nitro+ RX 590 8G G5 SE in a cMP 5,1. I chose that card because they supported using a single 8-pin connector. I bought a custom cable to go from the two motherboard 6-pin connections to a single 8-pin connector, but the adapter in the box worked as well - just didn't look as good. I previously had a Nvidia card with web drivers in High Sierra, but changed to the 590 just before upgrading to Mojave :-(. The card worked from day one, and was just identified as "Polaris" at first, but at some Mojave update point it became specifically identified as a RX 590. I run 2 4K Samsung displays at 60Hz. They work using HDMI or DP. Audio ports appear for both HDMI and DP in the settings, but my monitors do not have audio so I have not tested that. I bought the 590 because the chip was based on a new 12nm process, and I reasoned it would edge out the 580 in thermal efficiency, and possibly also in power consumption for the same workloads. I only paid about 30USD more than the 580 at the time. In the end, between the 580 and 590 I would recommend the cheaper card, as they are nearly identical. I've been happy with this card for well over a year now, and would recommend it wholeheartedly as a dual 4K solution that works with existing power. No boot screens, but I usually see update progress bars. Oh, and I'm not a gamer.

nice post @Dadr good to see a clear report on the RX590 pulse
cool to see audio output over DP is working well to

Although the RX 590's nominal TDP is 175w but like the RX 580 there is a probably a more significant power draw under Furmark etc.

The info below allows total balanced power from two Mini 6 pins + SATA + PCIe slot.
Should make the RX 590 shutdown-proof.

If you use an EVGa PowerLink you can add extra power from SATA using a 2 X SATA to 1 x 6pin.

I have this running on my MSI RX 580 8gb

Cabling

To the EVGs Powerlink

1.
2 X Mini 6 pin to Powerlink 8 pin input.

2.
2 X SATA to 1 x 8 pin ( or 6pin ) to Powerlink ( Powerlink comes with a spare 6 pin socket )
TWO SATA to ONE 6 pin.jpg

==========================================================

From Powerlink to GPU

1 x 8 pin to ( one 8 pin power socket ) GPU 8 pin.

The EVGa Powerlink balances the separate power streams to a single balanced output to the GPU
