Im estatic! I wasnt really planning on buying Leopard until late November/December, because I was saving to get some more ram, but I was quite disappointed to see that that education discount was only like 15 bucks or so. So from a suggestion from another post, I went to the up to date page on Apples site just to see what it would say when I entered my serial number. And to my delight, I saw it was only $9.95! I immediatly purchased it just incase they updated their system or something, noting all purchases before Oct 1 (The date they list that you are entitled to the 9.95 update price) lol. So I urge anybody who atleast purchased their Mac's in September to try also.

where did you go to enter your "serial number" its asking me to fill out a form for US customers...a link would be very appreciated! cheers

There is no guarantee that this order won't be invalidated if they go to verify. Serial numbers are always tagged with a purchase date = to the date your card was charged at the Apple store, or the date it was SHIPPED, if you ordered from the online store. I don't see how this would work.
I first ordered my MBP in June, had problems and finally received a replacement. In my case the replacement shipped September 29th. In other words, my serial number is tagged with a date of Sept 29th, the date it left Shanghai.
No way! We've been enjoying our machines for that much longer and Leopard really isn't all that expensive compared to, say, Windows Vista.
And chances are that you knew back in August that Leopard was coming in October, and yet you bought anyway.

I purchased my Macbook Pro on Sept 25 and was mad that I missed the Oct 1 cut-off date. So I just went to the Mac up-to-date page, entered all of my info, but it kept giving me errors. I changed the purchase date to Oct 1st, and voila - it went through!
I'm guessing they go by your serial number and check the manufacture date on it. The Apple Store where I bought my Macbook had just gotten it in, was fresh from the factory. So I guess they are really going by the manufacture date, not by actual date of purchase.

That may be true, but my card has already been charged, so I dont know how they would plan to undo my purchase. Im sure they wont just give my money back, and i'll raise hell if they try to charge my account the full amount of Leopard without notifying me first. Its not so unrealistic to think why it would go thru though. Some somputer stores might have had gotten their laptops in August or September, but not actually sold them until October. Does that mean that the person is not entitled to the update just because a macbook had been sitting in someone inventory for a month or so? Think about it.
Wow! It seems honesty and ethics go out the window when it comes to saving a buck. Yeah...if you enter a date of Oct. 1st or later it will let you order it. That does not make it ok to do though. Kind of like the people that lie about being a student/teacher to get the discount.

They cannot be certain the unit did not sit on the shelf for a few weeks. So there is some built in slack, it seems.
If you're reasonably close to the cut-off date and purchased it at a local store, maybe. Mine was shipped 9/30/07 for an online purchase, and it rejects me when I try to enter Oct. 1.
This will be my last post on the subject, I promise, but this is like antibiotics. If people abuse them, the rest of us pay. Keep trying to stick it to Apple and they'll stick it to all of us.
I ordered mine Aug. 23rd and put in Oct. 1st and it accepted it. This was just to see if it would though, I have no intentions to order a $10 copy that I don't deserve. Appears that I'm the exception.
Exactly the point I am trying to make. We will end up with licenses like MS has and no cost breaks for anything. Keep ripping Apple off and they will respond. Then all you will be whining for years.
I bought mine Aug 10th but got a defective one...the second one arrived on Sept 25th...so i consider i was 5 days before the cut off date and for the troubles caused they i take the right to enter oct 10th on the link you gave...it worked...so i hope they will not cross check and charge back the original Leopard price...

In my case, I bought my MBP on Sept 25, just a few days before the Oct.1st cut-off date - so no, I don't feel I'm being unethical or cheating Apple here.
When I ordered the Leopard upgrade, I entered the correct serial number - which is most likely attatched to a manufacture date. I assume that Apple checks this when you're placing the order and they probably let anything that was made in September or late August go through. Maybe it's just Apple's way of being nice I guess...? I doubt it's a glitch.
So yeah, if you were trying to get the discount Leopard for a Mac you bought in April or whenever, this would be dishonest, and I doubt Apple would let the serial go through. But since Apple didn't give a specific release date for Leopard until just the other day, I think the discount is fair for anyone who bought their's in September... IMO

They make the sytem like this so if your computer was on the shelf for a couple days you don't get screwed. I did this as well as my sister bought a laptop last month and I used her serial number. I don't care if I'm sticking to Apple or w.e. they are EXPECTING this! I'm 17 years old and an avid mac user for 6 years. I bet I know more about macs then many people in this forum so don't say its because of my age that I feel this way. 10 dollars is a deal and APPLES MISTAKE that my serial checks out. So all you guys no offense but get off Apple's dic*! Sorry that was unessesairy but then again I unlocked my iphone and I'm fed up about Apple with them abou that as well.
