Hm... Tiger for students is $69, isn't it? I'd imagine the edu discount will be better after Leopard isn't brand new anymore, it should eventually come down to $69 also, right?

If memory serves me right, when Tiger came out, and newer additions of iLife, Apple always required a PROOF OF PURCHASE, which means that those who didn't buy Oct. 1 or later, won't be eligible, even though it accepted their serial number.

It says it can't find my serial number. How weird. Anyone else having this problem?

yep me too just had the issue also. i tried jsut to see if it would work but it wouldnt find the serial
i bought my macbook back in august...oh well...using my iphone rebate on it anyways

Quelle surprise. Comme ça j'espère bien que ton nouvel ordi s'enflamme dès que tu installes Leopard. Grow up, ostie.

Je pense bien qu'il va être déçu...

From the Terms and Service :

To receive your Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard upgrade, you must complete the order form and provide a photocopy of a dated, itemized sales receipt or packing slip indicating the marketing part number(s) of the qualifying system(s) purchased.
The program ends on December 29, 2007. Completed order form, payment, and dated, itemized sales receipt must be postmarked or faxed by January 4, 2008, to the address or fax number listed on this form. Please note that only credit card orders can be faxed.

They probably don't even check the serial number on the page where you "authorize" a computer, apart from checking if it is in fact an existing Mac.

They can't know when you purchased it only by the serial number (except of course when you bought it from the Apple Store, but even then, they just don't check). You may have purchased a Macbook today at bestbuy that was built sometime in july.

Ah, so that's what it means. Probably for the best anyway; that's a pretty big lie to get caught in. :)

No way! We've been enjoying our machines for that much longer and Leopard really isn't all that expensive compared to, say, Windows Vista.

And chances are that you knew back in August that Leopard was coming in October, and yet you bought anyway. ;)

I see this put down on MS a lot. Vista Home Premium is cheaper than Mac OS X.

If you buy an OEM copy of Vista Home Premium from Newegg, it costs $111.99. The OEM copy ties the key to your motherboard, which isn't a big deal, because when you buy a new computer (whether you build or buy a Dell, HP, ect), you get a new motherboard, which would mean you would have to get a new copy anyway.

However, the only way to use Mac OS X (legally), is if you buy a Mac, which comes with the latest OS, and if you want to upgrade, it costs $129 (unless you're a student). And if you get a new Mac, it comes with the latest OS anyway, so it's a moot point.

I'm not hating against either company, it's just an incorrect statement to say that Mac OS X Leopard is cheaper than Vista. Yes, there is Vista Ultimate, but it's really a waste of money, as it doesn't really come with anything more than Vista Home Premium (Dreamscenes is the only "bonus," and it's already been hacked to work with other versions of Vista). Vista Ultimate comes with a bunch of business crap that consumers (you and me) wouldn't use, but for some people, it's worth the money.

And of course, you can say that Mac OS X Leopard, if you buy it from a store, isn't an OEM license. In reality, it pretty much is. To my understanding, the license for 129 dollars is for 1 computer. I'm sure you could transfer it to another computer, but in reality, that would be unneccessary, because the way I see it, the only reason why you would want to take Leopard off of a computer, is if:

A) Your computer is sluggish with it
B) Your computer died.

In either case, the only way to remedy that is to replace the computer, and most of the time, it would be replaced with a new computer, which would have the latest Mac OS.

The really nice thing about Mac OS X pricing is the family pack. 199 bucks for 5 computers. That is something that couldn't be done if you use Windows.

This will be my last post on the subject, I promise, but this is like antibiotics. If people abuse them, the rest of us pay. Keep trying to stick it to Apple and they'll stick it to all of us.

Honestly only reason I dont feel guilty about doing this is because I didnt recieve MBP in my hands until Sept 24, eight days before the start date of getting Leopard. I know its wrong either way, but come on, its not as if I purchased it in January and listed that I purchased it in October.. But I dont want to cause any trouble with this thread, so if a moderator is reading this, please lock or erase this thread please.

While it would be hard to argue that what you are doing is not a violation of Apple's terms, if you don't get caught, more power to you. It is your moral decision to make. If it had worked, I would have done it as well.

i got mine the legit way

yea so i totally ordered mine today for $9.95 and it says it will deliver by oct26. does that mean that i will get it on the 26th or that they will ship it on the 26th? idk. anyways, my brother works at an apple reseller in boston and they keep all the serial numbers on file and i think they put a sell date on the serial number or something because they had the date that i bought it on file and everything. but idk, that might just be a fluke.:D

But if they have accepted your order and billed your CC how can they still ask for you to fax all manner of stuff to them ?

If you ordered it from Apple directly you don't need to fax anything as they have all the records themselves.

I just ordered a Macbook (yes, yes, potential update and all but don't care. Time is money!) and as soon as I finished my order, I was able to go back and order the Leopard Up-to-date kit which was nice. I was worried I'd have to wait to get the Macbook before finding the serial number in order to get it. But no, all set. Now I just sit back and wait.

Well well, i guess some people are just lucky :) But to be honest whats wrong with them offering peepz just outside the 1st of October date a (silent) opportunity to do so.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they've done. Has anyone bought one like 25 Sept onwards and been knocked back? I think it's likely they just offer a buffer and factor it all in.

Right but it isn't fair to compare the OEM version, and in addition, the Home Premium version is feature-limited. The point is that Apple releases a single version, feature-complete, for a reasonable price.

How do you know your serial number?

My new iMac just went to "shipped" today and will be here Monday. Are you saying i can order this upgrade before i get the iMac in my hands? how do I know what serial number it will have on it?

Woops, spoke to soon. I found the serial number on the invoice but it did not work: "Sorry, we can't find the serial number you provided. Please recheck your serial number and enter it again.".

Since the status just went to "shipped", maybe its not in the system yet. I will try later or tomorrow.

Thanks.

I have. It rejects the serial number, so I guess I somehow got an older one than these other people who are sliding through.

Hmm.... that's odd that you couldn't do it. Mine hasn't even shipped yet. I ordered the Macbook then went straight to the up-to-date info, entered in my Apple Store ID etc. and the next screen I was faced with was "You qualify".

So i tried just for fun to insert my serial and actually works, even if i bought my MPB online on september the 16th, was shipped on the 28th...but actually i got it only on october the 3rd...is that a mistake or simply what counts is the date when you received the computer?
