Clever way to get free advertising. Modify an Apple product image and get posted on tons of gadget sites.

You can tell its fake because by just changing the Hue in photoshop with the Hue/Saturation slider you can get the exact shade from the pink ipod. Nothing else changed. Apple wouldnt make a new color by just changing the hue of the pink one in Photoshop.

Yeah, but this was a print piece, and printing errors aren't usually replicated by adjusting the hue slider in Photoshop.

In order to print the pink nano, the Cyan and Magenta would be the dominant colors. The pink is obviously more magenta than cyan. In order to make purple, the cyan would need to be applied much heaver...and that would drastically affect the blue and green ipods. And they don't seem to be significantly affected.

I still don't buy that Apple would accidentally release a shot of an unreleased product. But I'm having trouble figuring out how an alleged printing error would only affect the pink ipod, and not any other.

Edit: jsadwith - I think you nailed it. This is a prepress error. While I doubt it was scanned, I do think someone failed to color correct the image for the press.

Definitely a prepress error.

Take a look at the non-scanned JPG of the circular.

The shuffle colors are a subset of the nano colors. With the exception of the purple, the shuffle colors are the exact colors as the nanos.

What I have done is taken a sample of the shuffle colors in the upper right part of the ad, and placed them on top of their respective nano colors. You can see a very very clear difference. - especially on the blue one.

You'll notice the purples are very close in color, while none of the others are. If the purple were accurate, then the other colors would need to be much closer than they are.

In my mind, this is undeniably a prepress error.

Seriously People.

Did anyone else notice that the "silver" nano also appears powder blue in this ad? Seriously people. You think Circuit City would be the first to know and break the news in a print ad before Apple even got it up on their own site?

Now, I'm not usually one to criticize, but I can't believe this story was actually picked up as a rumour - on a Sunday - by MacRumours AND Engadget no less!

Although, for the record, I prefer the "error" pastel colours to the obnoxious faux 50's palate that Apple currently employs. Honestly, the look like the tiles in my Great Aunt Francis's kitchen.

I'm only being a devil's advocate here, but with some really simple hue and saturation changes to the image posted by arn, you can see that the purple nano could be either a printing/scanning error, or just someone who's not familiar with color modes. I'm no printing expert, but color issues like this are extremely feasible.

Also - ignore the (PRODUCT) RED nano...it's not even in the ad.

The Product Red iPod wouldn't be in a circuit city ad because you can only buy a product red from Apple Retail Store or Apple Online.

I'm also a little disturbed how engadget and gizmodo have both picked up on the story and run with it.

I will say that the existence of a purple nano is at the very least plausible, since there is a purple shuffle. However, I just don't think this ad is confirmation.

It seriously looks like they changed the brightness/hue of the colors somehow. Page two news. :D

And yeah, I personally hate the colors they offer. I might buy a new ipod sometime soon, but all those nano colors are so bad I would probably buy a classic or touch, even though a nano would suit me fine in terms of what it does. Hey, maybe that's part of Apple's strategy... ;)

I'd rather them release a 16GB to drop the prices of the 8GB :D I am going to buy a nano this Wednesday and am looking at the red one. A purple one might change my mind!

It's a printing error plain and simple. The part numbers are even listed underneath them and MB455LLA refers to the pink model. The person responsible probably wasn't familiar with the iPods (go figure) and saw the purple shuffle and the pink nano and figured the color was off on one of them. We could have just as easily ended up with a pink shuffle instead.

I was at CircuitCity earlier today and ironically noticed the printed out sign they they had by the iPod display -- showing this very picture. I thought that they had run our of ink in their printer or something!

yeah, comparing the one you posted with the one in the cc add, it looks like everything just has a bit of blue added to all the nanos

I agree, except that one of them is missing. There are six in one and five in the other.

But still, I think it's just a color screw up.

And wow, I kind of can't believe this made Page 1...
