no, hold down both the sleep/wake and home button till the phone switch off, count 1 and a little more and just BEFORE the apple logo appears leave the sleep/wake button but keep holding the home button. pretty simple. if you follow all the instructions correctly, pwnage will show you graphically how to put the phone in DFU..

You can recognize the mode when nothing happens even after pressing all the buttons. the screen on the phone just remains blank as if it is switched off, but iTunes gives a message saying iPhone is in recovery mode and you need to restore it.

We should have a program that automatically puts the iPhone in DFU or recovery mode IMO. Lot simpler and would result in many people not finding any difficulties.
