So as added entertainment during the Super Bowl yesterday, the Queen Mary 2 made an appearance in San Francisco. She's just getting ready to leave for Hong Kong as part of her maiden around-the-world cruise. It was pretty cool to see her come right by our family's apartment near Ghiradelli Square. Plus there were all kinds of little boats 'escorting' her in.

Here's the view from the rooftop, of Coit Tower and downtown, to give an idea of where we were standing.

This is the QM2 with Alcatraz peeking out from behind.

It was a pretty impressive sight, I hope you like the pictures.

She's stopped off in Guernsey a few times now. Shame I've always been at work when she has, otherwise I'd have taken a few photos.

Here's a couple of her sister ship the QE2.

Very nice pics...I wasn't able to make it out to see it, but my fiancée works right by Crissy Field, so she was able to pop out and get a glimpse.

The SF Chronicle has some very nice pics of it in their gallery as well.

A brief glance into thedude110's psychology, then. Upon reading the linked thread:

Dude. You could totally be a gentleman dancer.

You've gotta post this. Rich people are ****ed up.

Thanks for this thread, anyway. Can now fuel my evening lesson planning with dreams of myself as a gentleman dancer, twirling the night away ...

Great picture of San Fran and of the Queen Mary. I would like to live in San Fran after college but real estate is way way to high.

the QM2 and QE2 will both be in Sydney soon, QM2 moored at the Garden Island naval base and the QE2 in Circular Quay.

It's part of a commemoration of a famous photo taken during the war of the QM1 and QE1 passing each other between north and south head on the entrance to Sydney Harbour.

If I have the time I'll try and get some pics of the two of them, should be an amazing site, the QM2 is just so huge and the QE2 has some real history with Sydney.

From the Chronicle link that WildCowboy gave, here is one of my favorites. Taken from the headlands looking back over the bridge towards downtown. I'm in this picture somewhere... :p

Should be lovely, Chundles, to get them both in front of the Opera House.

Won't get them in front of the Opera House, the QE2 will come into Circular Quay next to the bridge but the QM2 is too big for the Quay and has to moor at the naval base a few bays down.

Ahh, shows what I know about Sydney geography. The QM2 barely fit into SF harbor, in fact it's the largest ship ever to enter. There was only about 18 feet of clearance underneath the Golden Gate.

Yeah, the Harbour Bridge would pretty much chop her in half, not sure even the QE2 can fit under the bridge - not that there's any need to go under the bridge.

What a gorgeous set of photos though gauchogolfer.

And isnt it pretty hard to navigate the bay as well? Aren't there alot of "shallow" parts that could easily damage a ship if your not paying 150% attention?

Certainly so. That's one reason that the ship's captain never brings her into a port. It's always the Port Pilot (local person) who actually directs her in from sea.

Meh...that's plenty of room. They've brought a couple of sets of cranes destined for the Port of Oakland through there with the clearance measured in inches. The specially-designed ships that were carrying them were capable of being flooded in order to squeeze out a few more feet if needed, but it would have destroyed the engines. Fortunately that wasn't necessary. In these cases, the bridge clearance was monitored by a guy sitting in the beams under the bridge watching as the cranes slipped by.

Incidentally, the QE2 is not the Queen Mary 2's sister ship. The QE2 and the original Queen Mary are sister ships. The QM2 is quite a bit larger, over three decades newer, and of a substantially different design.

Edit: oops, I didn't realize I was digging up a dead thread. Apologies!

I''m 15 years older then my brother, but he's still my brother! :D
But you're not ships! Sister ships have to be of the same class, i.e. the USS Enterprise is not a sister ship of the USS Ronald Reagan, even though they are both nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
